B Jones - you're right, poorly written by myself.

Speaking of lynchings have you seen this?
BOP Times Dick Moore
"Well I want to look my best in a figure-hugging, hand-stitched Ku Klux Klan outfit when I zip up to South Auckland to join the newly created Asian vigilante groups.
They've been overrun by robbers, crackheads, lowlifes and killers so I reckon they need a bit of a hand to keep the ever-increasing forces of darkness at bay."
"But now the thugs of South Auckland are going to get a bit of a shock as triad gangs and vigilante groups, trained in martial arts, will be roaming the streets looking for trouble-makers.
And let's hope they catch a few and deal to them in an unofficial capacity. I don't necessarily mean lynchings, or burning tyres around necks, or being dragged behind peoplemovers, but you never know."

Isn't Clint back on TV at Prime - thought I saw him on there.

"Ian, a single blow is never going to produce the injuries described and not denied. "
I don't know what happened but there are many cases of guys falling over and banging their heads ending up dead.
A friends brother ended up on deathrow in Texas after one punch, a badly placed bold and being black in Texas.
He's off deathrow now but not sure if he's out. That pisshead Ozzy cricketer who took on the bouncer and was thrown out of the pub, died when his head hit the ground.
Littlest actions can have very bad results. TRhat's why no violence is good & we no-longer use the 'rule of thumb'.

"What Veitch did was wrong and he should make amends as best he can. I see the settlment reached as a positive process and wonder if anything to come from this will be benificial to anyone."
Sorry - I was wondering if it becoming media fodder would help anyone.

"Fines are easy peasy for rich people, but impossible for poor people."
What's he on, five times the average wage? I don't know or care and each case should be treated on it merits. 20K to the victims of a serious assult may go a long way to making some victims feel a bit better and have some meaning to the offender, having to pay it off. This shud be done through the Justice system, where they pay out to the victim is done at sentencing and the guilty party can pay Corrections in service and fines. I really don't see any benifit in prison for the majority of people.
In her position I'ld not like my photo splashed around the papers, and see the resolution reached possibly the best of a bad thing.

That depends greatly on whether this expose comes from the victim, which would indicate the payout was as cynical as some would think it, or is some dirty media business to cripple the competition.

"along with a 15% increase in funding for Radio NZ earmarked for local content provision."
Local is a problematic term for RNZ. They are such Anglophiles, in makeup and content, I'ld fully expect 1/2 that to go to a Welsh language programme.

I agree Craig, I just wonder if strong attempts to make amends happened as part of the process including the 100K pay out (if thats the value).

I pretty much assumed his contracts are over now.
Norm Hewitt turned his life around for the better, time will tell.

Two laws have always worked in NZ, the lower classes get no inch, while the old school tie gets diversion.
I see a major payout as a better penalty than going to prison. IMHO community services and fines should be extended to the vast majority of prisoners, with some notable exceptions.
