  • Hard News: Part of nearly all our lives,

With Rodney Hide stoking up both a privileges committee case and – possibly by week’s end a Serious Fraud Office investigation - the evidence may ultimately receive formal evaluation, but don’t hold your breath. Add together the inbuilt deficiencies of the privileges process, the effects of the old and porous rules on political donations, the constraints of lawyer/client privilege, and the fact that the potential for prosecutions expired long ago …and keep in mind that the search for truth is being refracted through the myriad personality traits of Winston Peters, Wayne Peters, Brian Henry and Sir Robert Jones…and any investigator would be quailing at the prospect.

What an excellent piece of writing (from the Scoop item RB linked to)! Is Campbell's departure why the Listener is going down hill (as I'm told but haven't verified)?

And I don't think it's stretching plausibility too far to suggest that, both covertly and explicitly, the National Party conference this weekend is going to be told over and over again that there's not even a fag paper's worth of room for over-confidence.

Craig, I'm sure many others will support my request that you candidly report on the conference at PAS at your earliest convenience!

  • Hard News: Wild is the Weekend,

They're not running for election as far as I know.

Graeme, I might've been clearer; are National collaborating with Family First in any way; policy, funding or candidate selection? Is Stephen Franks, who has links to Family First and Sensible Sentencing, receiving any support from Familiy First?

I don't know when the writs open, and they may not field candidates, however neither did the Exclusive Brethren.

  • Hard News: Something odd and unresolved,

The TV station rightly decided that their stupid graphical response meter shouldn't decide the outcome of elections.

Hmmm, it was still running here in Australia last year... got figure.

  • Hard News: Something odd and unresolved,

Just poppin' in, How does Key have a "I'm my own man" thing goin' on?

Key's response to the questioning on his use of Crosby Textor was to claim that he was his own man and, as leader, set the direction of policy etc and wasn't been told what to do by a bunch of spin-miesters.

To an extent, all/every leader would say the same; what else is leadership? But, in Key's case, there's a legitimate question about what he really stands for. Though it mightn't be the most important issue for everyone, I still find it totally bizarre that he doesn't remember whether he was pro-tour or not?

My point is that, if he is to be believed in his claims to be in charge, what the hell was he thinking in placing Joyce so high on the list?

  • Hard News: Something odd and unresolved,

His nomination is likely to go down poorly with some in National's caucus, who believe he remains tainted from his association with the Brethren and Brash and disagreed with his controversial campaigning methods during the 2005 election.

I'm surprised by this; if Key wanted to stick with his "I'm my own man" routine, he should be avoiding relics (and tactics) of the former leadership. It does give breath to the 'same old, same old' narrative.

  • Hard News: Wild is the Weekend,

I am feeling strong sensations of revulsion.

Will someone please ask National whether they'd do a deal with this bunch of neanderthals (or have they already for Stephen Franks?).

  • Hard News: Wild is the Weekend,

Having watched some of the earlier games, I reckon it is time (if they haven't done so already) they introduced the yellow card for some Australian netballers!

I've watched a fair number of games between NZ and Aust, including a few here in Sydney: there'd be a good number of Aussies that would agree with you, but for Vili Davu and the great Temepara George.

  • Hard News: Wild is the Weekend,

So that's two tries that went begging...

Still, it's Waikato/BOP versus the Swifts tonight... I was offered tickets but have no babysitter!

Lets see if we can't restore some trans-Tasman balance by beating them tonight!

  • Hard News: Wild is the Weekend,

Oh, and Tracey has not only her game stats but a column:

I've long admired Nelson. All of her views are well thought out, clearly expressed and backed-up with numbers. She's easily one of the most astute writers around, why no weekly column I ask?
