  • Speaker: KICK IT! The Finals,

The old cliché is that sport and politics should not mix, the truth is that they should always mix, and they always do mix. If it weren't for the political, social and cultural backdrop to any sporting engagement, why else would we watch it?

It really is a strange statement, given that most of our most pivotal, memorable, engaged sporting moments involve national teams playing each other. If sporting nationalism isn't political....

  • Hard News: Party central is hurting my head,

Haden resigned without ever hearing a word from McCully*, if that is true it is a fairly damning insight to how useless and ineffective McCully really is - John Quiche must be so looking forward to coming
    home to this lot...

I heard on the news that Haden had his phone off and was basically in hiding from the rest of the world.

Bar going up there and kicking down his door, what's a minister to do? He can either wait or he can fire him without talking to him, which he probably didn't want to do, as they want to try and get their story straight.

The beauty of it is, a crowd watching at Nixon Park/ Kingsland could probably hear, and be heard, by the people inside Eden Park, which would really add to the atmosphere.

Given the traffic problems of moving 60K people from inside Eden Park away from the residential area, I'm not sure you want to add another 30K or so people partying outside.

And I'm not sure the local residents want a party involving about 100 thousand people just along from their house.

  • Busytown: A Thought Went Up My Mind,

Ah, but wait! This makes up for it:

There really should be more music videos with dancing roller skaters. It does add a whole 'nother level of awesome.

  • Random Play: Fiji #2: The Times, they…,

When the new Decree comes into effect (in fewer than three months) journalists must reveal to interviewees whether others will be interviewed in connection with the article. Those interviewed must know when the article will be printed or broadcast, whether it may be edited and whether only part or none of the interview will be used.

This sounds like a political high up who has gotten pissed at the way his interview got put into an article in the paper, and decided to decree that it was never going to happen again.

    DUDE WHERE IS MY CYCLEWAY?

John Key opened a cycleway last week. There's about six cycleways underway with government funding at the moment I believe.

I don't get the party central concept. Don't most places either use existing venues - sports grounds, stadia, or close off central areas like queen street and bring in massive screens?

Seems like we need party distributed a bit more.

They're more than a symbolic gesture when they impoverish an entire nation. I see them as pretty cruel.

There's a counter-argument, if you believe that sanctions have a point. Better to bring about change quickly than be part of dragging it out longer via providing economic support for its current status.

  • Hard News: The Commission, and creative risk,

But it's not necessarily a good model for creative funding. Jackson basically wants a handful of people empowered to spend public money on their hunches. He's living proof of how magnificently that can work out -- but it's a bloody tough sell to Treasury. And, if anything goes wrong, to a news media only too happy to make an issue of it.

I doubt very much, rightly or wrongly, whether NZ is an environment where that can happen at present. Every movie that doesn't fly is going to be pulled to shreds.

Here we are in the middle of really the first technical revolution in filmmaking since the invention of the movie camera

I'm going to stab at some other things that have been somewhat revolutionary - colour, digital manipulation/CGI, the addition of sound tracks to movies.

On that note, Islander, do you know of any books on Orkney or Shetland immigration to NZ? It seems like North Otago and Otago more generally was quite a popular destination for immigration from those islands.

There's a thesis been or being written on this topic at the University of Otago History Department. Jill Harland, The Orcadian Odyssey: The Emigration of Orkney Islanders to New Zealand, Australia and Canada 1840-1914.

You're curiously bent? I know it's Friday and all, but still, won't someone think of the children?

It's OK, he was just making himself curiously bent for the duration.

Also, here is a picture of a newborn elephant.

That link might need a warning. That's a dead prem baby elephant. Or a fake.

At birth baby elephants stand about three feet tall and weight 30 - 50kg.
