  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

And similarly, a lot of people buy the Guardian Weekly - they're willing to pay for a solid product.

In this day and age I don't understand why so many of them get it posted to them weekly though.

Surely financially, keeping up with a newspaper that's overseas is a great niche market where people would be willing to pay for instant access without sending rolls of newsprint around the world. That's where a paywall might make sense.

I think the risk is killing off local journalism.

Which might not be great now, but imagine if newspapers can no longer survive by belonging to a city. You might end up with two competing news organisations producing a national daily paper, with a local insert of a page of local news in order to save money.

That's an interesting theory 3410. I would imagine that the base for these would be through the owners. So and so owns 60 papers and magazines in a bunch of different markets. The owner puts the waywall over all of those individual media and paying $10/week gets you full access to all of them. A smaller fee gets you access to your local paper and three or four others.

  • Field Theory: My first All Black game,

All I see is the same coaching panel playing the same sort of "total" rugby and heading for the same sort of ignominious exit at the hands of a negative, penalty kicking, stifling defensive effort as the last few RWC's.

Given that two of the last three times we've been knocked out of the world cup it has been France that knocked us out, I'm not sure that's an accurate description of how they played.

  • Hard News: Ideology for Evidence,

But it will not apply to everyone? Clearly and obviously not.

An email that I got today indicated that the law only applies when changing employers, not jobs. So if you move around different jobs in an organisation, no probation period can apply, it's only when you move to a new employer that it can kick in.

So it really does discourage people taking risks with their employment and moving into new fields, physical locations.

It will be interesting to see whether 'no probation' becomes a point of difference for large employers.

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

Does anyone know if CFS is the result of the body actually having normal fatigue symptoms - lactic acid etc. Or if it's more "phantom" in that the parts of the body are actually fine, but it's sending the wrong signals to the brain?

  • Hard News: Changing the News,

I've noticed that a couple of times recently Pete, can't remember which channel, but I think it was sports news as well.

It looked like they'd downloaded it from youtube or similar.

  • Cracker: P is for Politics.,

Is it really possible for a warrant to be issued under the Misuse of Drugs Act if a passing off-duty cop (on an evening jog say) smells or detects the aroma of pot? I mean, if he goes to the powers-that-be the next day and tells his tale, is that one single factor sufficient for a search warrant to be issued?

My understanding is that the Misuse of Drugs Act doesn't require warrants. The law allows police officers to execute a search of a person, vehicle or property where they have good reason to believe that illegal drugs are being used. They just have to cite the law when they demand entry.

Speaking of best OF, which would you rate as the best Outrageous Fortune episode?

Series 5, when Judd brought his baby back to the house, and Cheryl went missing. I can count the movies and TV episodes that have made me cry on one hand, that one broke me for an hour or so.
