What makes this one so infuriating is that it could've been mitigated if the recommendations had been followed through. The cost to mitigate this risk properly might've run up to $100-ish-k if scaled out across all WINZ offices with the kiosks (assuming additional costs for physical segregation devices), but that's guesstimating at the very high end and compared to the costs of cleaning up properly after this debacle it's a complete bargain. Doing the damage control properly on this one is millions of dollars.
Sure, <$100K would have prevented this from blowing up into a million-dollar cock-up, but you need to look at the big picture. This is just one instance, there are probably dozens of similar problems, not just IT system issues, but general systemic problems (for example, allowing rich foreigners with iffy backgrounds to buy residency). Finding and fixing all of them would be very, very expensive.
So they amortise the risk of one or two of the problems blowing up over the whole portfolio and bingo, its waaay cheaper to just sweep 'em under the carpet and fix the few that turn up in the papers. -
The webcomic 3-Chord Dorks has an enduring love of game soundtracks and the bands that cover them.
Apparently there are webcomics dedicated to the websites dedicated to the bands that are dedicated to performing covers of game music. -

When in the UK, I'd go out every morning and buy the Berliner format Guardian and the broadsheet Daily Telegraph. Guess which one I tended to read first on the train?
Given APN's new owners, perhaps the Berliner format would have been more appropriate...

Trust Microsoft to teach you wrong. I'm pretty sure that was Comic Sans' evil cousin Papyrus.
That's what I get for taking the word of a NY Times infographicist! He gained my trust with his hipster glasses and same first name as me...

Given NZ's population, surely everyone must have been on a reality show by now?
I was on (in the background of) Dream Home a few years back. The important thing to remember about any of these shows is that they are not competitions, they are TV shows, and as such will be manipulated however the producers see fit to boost the ratings.
I didn't watch The Block, for example, but all this hooha about the losers needing charity? The 'losers' on Dream Home generally got at least half their mortgage covered by the show on the hush hush.

Refreshing the Herald website, mobile app and the printed paper on one day was an ambitious thing to do
They updated the mobile app? Mine's just the same as before, and no updates listed in the Marketplace.
Unless it was just the iPhone app that got a facelift. -
Being as I'm actually in Auckers next Thursday, I might well pop along. Given that my other choice is The Feelers (and Minuit, to be fair) at the Cloud I'm only torn because it includes copious free beer paid for by Microsoft (they SO owe me!).
