Nothing like berry picking on a hot summer's day.

Pleased to see OED chose Omnishambles as their WOTY, but hard to go past Dotcom.

  • Hard News: This is your public broadcasting, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

I've been really enjoying a bunch of TV shows that have been turning up on TV this year. 7 Days consistently is good. Nothing Trivial is nice relaxed Sunday night viewing, Tangawai and Billy T shows were both excellent, and I've even enjoyed the bits of NZs got Talent that I haven't fast forwarded through. Media 3 and Backbenchers is coming back. I can probably even forgive them for the GC.

And The Almighty Johnsons is coming back!

Anyone who's not too busy or cool to watch Shorty might have seen a very good example of the power of a hug the other night...

  • Hard News: Why did Stephen die?, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

And just as an example of how cops get roped in for more social control, here's Auckland Council considering a smoking ban in beaches and parks.
But it also means cops being tasked to go and hunt out recalcitrant smokers, and a new sub-group of people getting a negative view of the police. So they get less help, get shunned by more people, and become more isolated and insular.

Do cops actually spend any amount of time enforcing council bylaws?
I know here in Hamtown we have a bylaw banning the windscreen washer guys at intersections. But as the Council's enforcement team work mostly 9-5 and not much at weekends, we still have them, every weekend, outside Pak N Save. I've never seen a cop stop to talk to them.

  • Hard News: Party on, dudes, in reply to Danielle,

I can't believe Knowledge Bro hasn't checked in yet!

Late to the party, as usual, but I really want to add my congratulations to Russell and all the rest of the immediate and extended crew.
I'm casting my mind back, trying to recall when I first read Hard News, it was probably on a newsgroup, and probably around '05 or '06, but the distant past is such a blur now...
I've spent more time on PAS in the past than I do now, as my work does tend to suffer if I let myself open it during work hours... but even when I don't have the time to keep up with the comment-streams I always keep an eye on the columns, and and a virtual ear out on Twitter.
The nicest thing about PA is you meet the nicest people here, and even though I haven't met many in person, due to not-quite pathological shyness, you're all sweeties, even (especially) the grumpy ones.

Cheers! Any here's to many more...

  • OnPoint: MSD's Leaky Servers,

I imagine the next move will be to withdraw from having kiosks altogether, while pointing at Keith Ng, saying "This is why we can't have nice things!"

Then drag on the 'investigation' for as long as possible, and when attention has moved on, possibly to an election, and no leaked information springs into the public eye, assume all was well and move on.

  • OnPoint: MSD's Leaky Servers, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

Heh heh. He said "extra money".

Considering the Police have been told they aren't allowed extra money, even though they have gang members trying to join up. It must be starting to look like Police Academy 3 down there in Porirua...
