  • Hard News: There is History,

According to this Center for Disease Control and Prevention factsheet swine flu is quite common in the US and human-to-pig and pig-to-human flu direct transference also common. It's the human-to-human Influenza A(H1N1) version that is more rare.

In NZ one of the Hawke's Bay possibles (school trip that returned from North America last Tuesday) has been confirmed as North American influenza so caution still required.

  • Hard News: There is History,

The Philippines are reported to have cancelled imports of NZ Pork. The pork industry is trying to push that this is not swine flu (i.e. the pigs don't have the virus) and would prefer "North American influenza".

World Health Organization has gone from alert 4 to 5 (out of 6), on as yet unproven levels of transmission.

This 'epidemic' was picked up on because it occurred 'out-of-season', in a year that higher rates of influenza in NZ were expected anyway.

By the way Russell, B Wileman may not be from Johnsonville - the street address used is a commercial site, a private postbox company - so online companies can appear to have a street address.

In reference to the birth of net culture in NZ, I worked at DSIR between 1982 and 1992. Most of the techie stuff came from Science and Mathematic units either at Universities or DSIR. Most of the management was male - back then the computer managers all needed to have doctorates and in those days most with Science type doctorates were male. At one stage out of 16 computer sites - one manager was female and one of the operators was male.

  • Cracker: Of Tweets and Twats,

    Danielle,

The re-done versions of the Milly Molly Mandy books are still in print, some books last through the generations. Pippi Longstocking lasted a while too. Haven't seen a MMM book for 12 years but can still remember the essence of them, especially the black ink village illustrations.

Re the lolly people/animals surely the question is which end (head or feet/tail) to eat first.

    Mark,

When there are groups like Generation Rescue that say they have research that vaccines increase Autism rates there is certainly more science required.

Aardvark is not a supporter of Powershop - his version is that the green option is not green production but is instead 'plant a tree'.

On a more positive note the Detroit Free Press mentioned elsewhere months ago won one of the Pulitzer prizes for Journalism
