My limited understanding of boganry is that in order to qualify for full status under those parameters one had to have jumped on that bandwagon at any point up to and including …And Justice for All (1988)

Anyone applying later than the release of New Zealand number #1 “The Black Album” (1991)

required corequisite Sepultura, Slayer or Pantera, and tight black jeans.

Another is knowing off by heart all the past models of any Aussie-built cars (and Yankee ones too). My dad drove a few of them as company cars back in the 80s.

Real bogans I,ve known, (including one with a doctorate), don’t seem to get with offshore sailing like I do.

Unlike regular beachgoers they used to be famous for putting their jeans on to go swimming.

I think you're showing your age. Even in the 90s there was this thing called 'listening to the back catalogue'. Well into the 90s I bewildered my 4th form science teacher by making the whole class listen to Master Of Puppets then fill out questions about their emotional state for our in-class science experiment competition. The methodological design was not rigorous. I didn't make it to the Science Fair.

It may not be a boganry qualification, but it was (and is) a qualification for metalheadery. Liking just black-and-post-black Metallica is cause for severe side-eye in that community, unless you can show substantial other metal cred.

But as Tze Ming points out, love of metal is not the criteria here: it's a category error.

So good luck to Labour, or to any other political party, but before you chase the Bogan vote you have to prove the worth of politicians in general first.

So Labour, and all the other political parties *should* chase the Bogan vote, and they should do so by proving the worth of politicians.

    "Me?

I just want a party to vote for whose three guiding principles are (a) maximize individual liberty, (b) minimize the Gini coefficient, and (c) protect the commons. Yes, I am aware that these three goals are orthogonal and often conflict with one another: that's why it requires an ongoing process of negotiation rather than an ideologically-driven damn-the-torpedoes race to the goal.

I don't have the requisite Metallica qualification (came on board with the Black album), but can I cross credit my Iron Maiden, or is that too middle class?

Hmmm. Dunno if that characterisation of Hall's approach to subcultures is correct. Hall allowed for them to have a fair degree of social agency and creative independence. Anyhow, I'm from working-class origins, albeit ChCh (Riccarton, to be precise). I've known gay bogans who like metal, wear their hair long, smoke weed and regard same-sex marriage as a non issue 'cause it gets in the way of their having lots of sex. There are even bogan drag queens in Oz.

What some surfers disparage as "goat boats". I may be wrong, but I've tended to take a fondness for that kind of dismissive jargon as an indicator of boganhood in itself. Like affirming one's appreciation of proper motorcycles by dissing trailbikes as "chook chasers".

  • BenWilson,

Surely having, or at least aspiring to have, at least one muscle car is a bogan prerequisite. It needn’t be Australian any more, any more than the bogan need be white. My Japanese mechanic and his wife are pure bogan. He even eats meat pies by choice. The only thing really undermining his credentials is that his favourite kind of car is Volkwagons. There’s something suspicious about that.

Meeting him to discuss modifications to my muscle cars (back when I last vaguely qualified as a bogan – which raises the question about whether one can deboganize?) was always quite amusing – he was like a fortune cookie of bogan wisdom: “No, not going to change ratio on supercharger pulley. Your con-rods will snap. In order to strengthen your car, first you must begin with strengthening your drive train”. His Volkswagon was never off the hoist the entire time I was going to him. Presumably, at the end, when he was finally done with every fiddly little perfectionist aspect, he was actually going to soup it up to make it actually faster. But for the mechanically obsessed, that was of little significance. You might not be able to feel the forged pistons, but you’d know they were there. Other bogans would know, and if they were not perfect, the shame would be unbearable.

*And as for his wife, despite being diminutive, I'm damned sure that I would not wish to end up in a tussle with her. She looked ready for it at all times - there was a reason she collected the debts for his business. I could imagine her asking a debtor "Is is your wish to die?".

I don't remember anyone using the term bogan back in Hawke's Bay in the early 80s, and the metal de jour was AC/DC and Iron Maiden, not Metallica.

The VW is the anti-bogan car, really. It’s understated, respectable looking but in many models ridiculously fast. (My mother had a Golf GTI at the age of 80. Me: What’s that blipping noise when I lift off the throttle – does it need checking? Mum: It’s the turbo wastegate dear. Me: Your car has a turbo?)

Bogan cars, OTOH look fast, make a loud noise but struggle to deliver acceptable performance and handling. See Aussie V8 racing – it was an entire racing code with a caveat that the cars had to be built using 1950’s technology. (I think they now race Japanese and German cars, the Australian motor industry having run out of buyers for their land yachts and closed down).

Thought I would add a couple of points from growing bogan in West Auckland. First Ford or Holden? no middle ground, never seen in the other badges car at point of losing all bogan cred (even one night offered lift back home after drinking, but... it was a Holden FFS!!!!). Second, dress was black jeans white sneakers and black t-shirt of any metal band. As I am still living out West, I am glad to see that dress code as not changed much as now add car manufacturers/teams jackets.
By the way reading all this brought back a pile of great memories from the 80's and 90's.

conservative ≠ “pathologically racist, misogynistic, homophobic and thick as a bucket of pig shit left out in the sun” any more than bogan does.

Oh, right. Well put. I don't think I was suggesting that. Rather, the opposite. Although you raise an interesting question. What _do_ you call those people?

Any bogan with there salt, will have contacts with geek tendencys.

Which reminds me, where's Tom Semmens? A guy who seems to practice a form of garage anthropology on his flatmates' proletarian credentials should be cleaning up on this one.

Bunch of folks chilling at Hardware cafe, Titirangi. V8 Torana cruises past, throbbing, yellow, shiny as hell. Fat chick in a black wife-beater and not much else hangs out the passenger window. Full bull roar: "You're all a pack of fuckin cunts!" Vroom, schreech, gone.

    Good times!
