At the risk of seeming like a party pooper, I think the next step for Bill English has to be to say what he'll do to improve the situation for autistic children and their families.
National's rhetoric on education - and some of the things he has said personally - don't fill me with hope, but I'd love to be proved wrong.

I enjoyed the night - tough crowd for the fellow from Dunbar Sloane. Being a Monday can't have helped.
I too was impressed with Mr English's spiel - not his usual televised demeanour. I preferred to think of that speech as indeed being from 'Billy Glish', instead of from the aformentioned deputy leader.
Saw the nuts - nicely bagged. Bid on and won the Babylicious voucher - although apparently David Cohen left the voucher at home - so I'm waiting for a call to sort it out.
Can't say I recognised anyone - though it was good to say hullo to RB briefly. Indeed a worthy cause. Thanks to all those who put it together - and a great choice for a url.

Saw the nuts - nicely bagged
Strictly utilitarian - they hang drying in those bags for 3 months. I plan to get nicer ones for similar occasions to the Hustle.

I should add that I really did like the utilitarian look of the bag - just couldn't for the life of me figure out what I'd do with that many nuts! :-)

You crack them & eat them!
Propaganda I have read states that eating 10-20 macadamia nuts each day will see a cholestoral reduction of 7% over several weeks (can't recall exactly how many weeks).
And they are calorie neutral (Martha at Wandaharland.blogspot.com suggests this is because of the effort required to get at the kernel). Apparently.

What method do you recommend for cracking macadamias? I've had a bag in the cupboard for months, because trying to whack 'em with a hammer just sent them riccocheting around the place. I tried drilling a hole in a hunk of wood to hold them still while I whacked 'em, but after about 3 nuts, the hunk of wood split in half.
They're fiesty, tricksy little buggers them macamadamias. -
You need a B.O.N.K. Which are the best I've found so far (although I managed to break one of their earlier models on a very tough nut.)
I think Kirks & other stores sell them, but they're available online also.

My bloody dog has broken two of her teeth cracking windfalls. Gluttonous labradors.

No - she doesn't seem to have noticed. It's me not smiling after the vet told me where this leads to down the track... uncracked nuts now off the canine menu.

Hmmm, I've seen gummy bears, but never a gummy labrador...
Still, at least its just a fang or two, we used to have a lab that managed to lose a leg after getting frisky with a hay mower. Didn't slow him down much on land, but he couldn't catch up with the ducks in water like he used to. -

Not quite as bad as it sounds, he tried to jump on the back of the tractor while the mower was going, and cut a tendon just above his front paw. They had to take the whole leg off, cause a wrist stump is worse than useless to an active dog.

Something similar happened to my first dog (although not involving a hay mower). She was old though & we had her put down. Very sad.

Macadamia and Glaced Citrus Tart
Shortcrust pastry
300g chopped glaced peel
3 tablespoons Grand Marnier (Cointreau will do)
Grated rind of 1 orange
150g soft butter
125g almond meal
125g castor sugar
3 eggs
200g unsalted MACADAMIA NUTS
Extra caster sugarMacerate peel and rind in Grand Marnier. Line tart mould (small, about 20cm diameter) with pastry. Dust with extra caster sugar.
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time and beat well. Add almond meal. Add the glaced fruit.
Pour into the tart shell and put MACADAMIA NUTS on top. Push them down into the mix.
Bake at 190 Celsius for about 40 minutes.
Best served warm, but not hot, with lightly whipped cream.
