  • ChrisW, in reply to Joe Wylie,

While I don't believe that your connecting Ford and Radley's call for greater openness on the discussion of seismic data with the Ken Ring fringe was intentionally snide, it's hardly justified by even a casual reading of their submission.

Sorry, Joe - no connection of the Ken Ring fringe with the significant Ford/Radley submission implied, certainly not intentionally. My Ken Ring reference was instead in connection with the NZHerald fringe.

Understood ChrisW. Very apt, considering that the NZH is still happy to feed him the oxygen of publicity on a slow news day. If it's not the orange jacket it's the silly hat.

  • Russell Brown,

Anyway, just a heads-up that Jose Barbosa and I are traveling to Christchurch for the CEISMIC launch and will look to get a full show's worth of stories while we're there.

I've already found recent discussions here very useful -- we're talking to Dean Kozanic from The Press about the media access issues -- and I'd be interested in other media-relevant tips and observations.

We also have a meeting booked with Roger Sutton.

You got a meeting with Roger!
We tried since it was CD and just got in a month or so back.

So far I think Canty have had at least 3 Dist Commanders and Acting Dist Commanders in the last 6 months.
Where is Dave Cliff? He is well respected and seems to be in quarantine as the Cera contagion continues.

Is the Christchurch City White Zone gay?
There is a don't ask / don't tell status on the land.
Many buildings are being demolished with out any mention of land, including the Ecan "Bunker". There are massive sink holes in Kilmore St between the Town Hall & Conventon Centre.
So what does that mean for those of us in multi story buildings built on silt - like the Casino - in the event on another earth quake event?

  • Hebe,

Unplugged one from the archives, September 5 last year, before the psych people got John Key's ear, when everyone was still speaking out loud rather than whispering in dark alleys as now:

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/4096823/Bigger-earthquake-predicted-to-come

    And here's a good one:
    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/338428/Closer-links-between-scientists-and-Civil-Defence

And this from late last year http://www.stuff.co.nz/science/4200738/Scientists-can-t-rule-out-fault-below-Chch

A report on the Boxing Day shake when Mr Gledhill was allowed to speak to the media: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/4497142/Latest-quake-more-violent-than-first

The point of this 20-minute googling: it's obvious to me as a former journo versed in the ways of the public service that from Feb 22 on GNS have been required to have their messages "clarified" by a power greater than themselves to absorb the shockwaves of public panic. This greater "clarity" would not necessarily have led to telling the whole truth. Any of GNS' scientific conclusions may well have been almost unrecognisable by the time they left the censor's office.

  • Sacha,

Philip Matthews writes beautifully of disrupted memory and place. (h/t Jolisa - and happy birthday).

Most of us have not had reason to think about this before. Who determines what goes where? Should it be left to capital or the community?

    ...

In the past few months, some lines written by Sydney-based New Zealander Martin Edmond have circulated around Christchurch. His newest book, Dark Night, describes a nocturnal journey he took through central Sydney, in the footsteps of artist Colin McCahon, and through his own memories of the city he moved to nearly 30 years before. He sees the site of an old hospital. It had been demolished and a luxury apartment block had gone up in its place.

He writes, "I still feel a pang, and not just because I can't remember any more what the hospital looked like: it also has to do with the way the places we belong to do not belong to us."

It is that last part that has been sent around Christchurch, on emails and through social media: we are realising that the places we belong to do not belong to us. These places can disappear suddenly, with no preparation or warning, and render much of our world unrecognisable.

Bloody hell JT, it was real. Not a demolition derby with Brownlee as the Humber Super Snipe, taking the hits* & chortling, but a red-carpet event where everyone got a BRICK, ffs:

*According to Mike Coleman, 'taking the hits' politically is Brownlee's role, which he presumably relishes. As they used to teach together at St Bedes, Mr Coleman presumably knows what he's talking about.

You're not kidding. Workmen scamble over the abandoned ruins pulling on wires & shoving them in their pockets, is a sight not far removed from picking up cans from the bin or ciggies from the gutter.

Joe - I think 20secs into that vid has a guy whose middle name we will all know soon enough from the court pages.

Workmen scamble over the abandoned ruins pulling on wires & shoving them in their pockets . . .

An old Chch. tradition for those who grew up in Wainoni & Aranui in the era of the vast Aranui dump. What kid could resist the myriad recreational possibilities of that enchanted wasteland, while racing the seagulls and braving the dumptruck drivers in the heady pursuit of the winking instant wealth to be had from copper wire? Not my younger rellies, who I hasten to add are NOT involved in demolition these days.

According to one who remembers, the dump kids were "little buggers in grubby grey shorts that made them look as if they farted a lot", who addressed one another by colourful noms de dump such as Scum of the Woods and Pig of Notre Dame while bickering over their spoils. The dump's now buried under Bexley Park. Given the present price of steel I'm assured that it'd be economic to mine the place, as there's several gas works worth alone entombed there.

  • Just thinking, in reply to Joe Wylie,

Indeed, I was always told of the joy of running through the dump by Mum & banned from doing it by Dad.
For Bexley this os obviously a chance to rehabilitate the land nad stop pollutants from poisoning the estuary. Things like steel & copper.

By way of a little background, you could try picturing yourself as living in darkest Southshore or Spencerville with a big chunk of your life on hold. After having had your hopes raised a couple of weeks back by loose talk from Brownlee about an impending decision re. the orange zones, you've been counting the days until Sutton's next announcement, just like you did last week. Imagine your reaction when you read this.

Unsubstantiated rumour has been said - Roger Sutton has presented his resignation on three seperate occasions to Gerry and it has been refused each time.

  • Just thinking,

Substantiated statements have it that the Anglican Bishop wants Christ Church Cathedral Demolished.

I hear even Sir Miles Warren (who worked on its Earthquake strengthening) had a great deal of trouble getting an audience and was not greatly encouraged by the response he got about saving the building.

The Bishop often talks about the Church being about people, not buildings. Forgetting for whom the buildings are made, by whom & who maintains them.

The people of Christchurch maintain the Cathedral, to the tune of over $1/4mil per year. It was built largely on civic donations.

The finacial burden of this building is born by the City of Christchurch and is not to be stolen by some Pom (Beck) & a fleeting visit by a Canuck (Matthews).

Interesting image. For some reason it evokes the lyrics of an old Korn Kobblers number:

Some day they'll bury me out on the prairie
Out there among the sage brush where the skies are blue
But when they dig a hole for me to rest in
They better dig it big enough for two

Oh, I can't get offa my horse
All day and night I ride among the cattle
'Cause some dirty dog put glue on the saddle

I cannot envisage a proper contract that does not allow for resignation.
