A calm and reasonable post and "hear hear", say I. Craig, thanks and I hope that the film resonates but maybe the wrong people won't get to be challenged. Sadly.

Passing through the casino en route to the cinema reminds one of how a sad and desperate place it is in the glare of daylight.

Not going to argue with that, but it's a lovely little theatre and as far as the Festival is concerned in the Auckland CBD it's a good middle ground as far as size goes between The small-but-now-perfectly-formed-under-new-management Academy and the cuddly leviathan that is the Civic. (Putting on my Auckland Film Society hat, I've also got to the say the SkyCity Theatre management were fine to deal with. In a bizarro reversal of the new normal, we had two films in our programme this year only available on... well, 35mm film. Our usual venue, The Academy, is now all-digital. It's their management who need a double shot of "WTF is going on?")

SkyCity will probably argue that the new Convention Centre and the Casino are two separate entities. Also, aren't they removing the theatre soon to fit in more pokies and tables?

Your prayer to the dark lords has been answered and the issue is now resolved.

Crap leg room, though. And I'm five foot three.

I'm not a big film festival goer. Given the general ... ickyness revealed in the past couple of days, I am penning a quiet note to the NZIFF telling them I won't be attending any. They may well be a trying to do good, but they are providing material support for an institution (Sky City) that is attempting to operate in a way that I can not, in good conscience, turn a blind eye to.
Pretty similar to the reasons I won't be going to see Enders Game.

I would love to see this version of HE TOKI HUNA: NEW ZEALAND IN AFGHANISTAN but as it is only being shown once in the Skycity theatre that is not an option.
I get the irony of its screening in Skycity but I'd just as sooner not watch any films there because the leg room is only good for children never mind I don't like giving $ to a casino.
The Jon Stephenson court case has now concluded with a pathetic hung jury not able to decide on the defamation claim despite the NZDF admitting its lies.
Now its over to the PM to apologise but given that he can't even sleep straight in bed that is not going to happen.
On the NZIFFI did get to see an excellent Palestinian film called Omar at Skycity (which is why I say the leg room is hopeless) While is is a fictional account it does capture the war on truth that is always part of these conflicts.
One of my friends worked for 3 months on the West Bank for an international project. Each morning he went through the gate into the West Bank and out again each night. Sadly he found it an impossible situation with no resolution in sight.
The context of conflicts like Afghanistan ( & Palestine) is that we need to support journalists like Jon who make very real sacrifices to report back. I hope NZ film can be screened again and at a theatre that is not part of a casino.

HE TOKI HUNA was very good indeed. An excellent intro by the film makers & Q & A afterwards with Simon Wilson contributing.
The theatre is awful tho. The seats in each row are joined together so when one moves, others do too. I gather they are going to recover them & put down a new carpet but its still going to be a sow's ear.Or nether parts.
The worst aspect is catching the lift and looking in at the pokies & punters. Sad.
