But when you apply the study conclusions to the internet as a whole, you get exactly what we’re seeing now: communities like Reddit and 4chan are criticized (negative feedback), and begin to see themselves as persecuted. Their worst sides gain strength. The volume of negative output increases, and the gleeful nastiness drives out thoughtful, balanced conversation, even within the communities themselves.
I know of no rough beast whose hour has come at last to solve this. Not feeding the trolls—whether individual or collective—isn’t always practical, and the model that keeps communities like this sane (strong, human moderation) can’t work across multiple sites with no unified owner.

Get the feeling that Australians are extremely grateful that comprehensive surveillance has resulted in a handful of crazed jihadists being apprehended today, allegedly planning to behead somebody.
Surveillance is there to catch baddies, not goodies.
Thankfully here, the Moment of Truth became the Moment of Farce.Reminded me so much much of operation 8 – what with the 800 police officers for 15 suspects. They might as well have brought the full Australian Police force. And wouldn’t you know, officers all dressed in that same very dark very threatening paramilitary anti-terror garb like they’re attending a BRAZIL costume party, I can see the appeal of wanting to dress up like that for larks, but as a fashion statement by Governments and Police Forces, but let’s not pretend that the message being sent isn’t anything more than “I’m with Sith”. Some clothing label is making a killing.

I've genuinely never had so much fun in a long time.
And that's all due to the remarkable attention I've received.
The respect you've shown me was plainly seen in how many of you vain-glorious snobs come after me with every contribution I've made.
Ignoring my posts would have been a sign that I'm not very clever, not very articulate, not able to irritate and frustrate but hell no! Quite the opposite in fact!
Because without exception, the likes of that total fuckwit Ian or the precious Danielle or whoever took the bait each and every time.
My workmates really loved the impact I kept making. They couldn't believe what an orgy of pure intellectual snobbery I provoked.
Sorry Russell but I did try to engage without provoking at one stage after you suggested I back off a bit. But after that, you never really came down even-handedly on the abuse [latest example...Steve's lavatory-humour abuse] I took and so I decided to go along for the ride and give as good as I got.
I also look forward to tapping in after this weekend to read how you're all consoling yourselves now that you've got another three long years to tolerate with Key at the helm.

I hadn’t read right to the bottom of his post and when I did I felt it needed some revision. I’m always willing to give the benefit of the doubt, as has been accorded me – as you quite fittingly point out.
Trollathons like that in this climate are likely to do more harm than good for his cause.
I like that Russell’s prepared to catch all types on record. Insights for future anthropologists.
