Yes, indeed, HRH Camilla did use the word "wicked" but in the modern sense of the word and expressed genuine delight at the announcement. It is regrettable that both the media and many readers, even as far afield as New Zealand, seem to sneer at (i) the engagement and (ii) make unnecessary comparisons with Charles and Diana's lamentable relationship. There are suddenly self-appointed "experts" everywhere filling endless column inches with mere speculation and offensive comments rather than informed knowledge. There is already a proliferation of bad taste souvenirs, with doubtless more to come, largely made in China. One thing is for certain: until the event takes place we will be subjected to more of the same rather than marking an extremely significant historical occasion in a constructive and memorable fashion. The Royal wedding will be a boon to the British economy, and further afield, wherever HM The Queen is head of state, which is to be welcomed in an otherwise extremely bleak international economic landscape currently showing few signs of genuine recovery.

That was satire, right?

I think that when Martin wrote ” an extremely significant historical occasion” he was being serious.
Which is a bit weird.

I thought so too--otherwise we are doomed. The British economy is going to be re-built on table doilies and bridesmaid bouquets ?

Wicked? 90s kiddiespeak. And the 'wicked' stepmother's 63, FFS.
The kind of contortion you're working yourself into to justify some dismal palace PR flack's attempt at presenting a down-with-the-kids Camilla could lead to a case of grovel rash. -

I'm genuinely curious: how precisely is this going to improve the Commonwealth's economies? When we all run out to buy souvenirs?
(There is, however, a curious confluence between this and the story as reported in the American media, which was very heavy on the "opportunity to make money off tourism!" aspect and light on everything else.)

Oh, okay. I am reliably informed that Camilla did say "wicked"
From today's Evening Standard (not online):
Asked about her views of the impending royal nuptials the Duchess of Cornwall proclaimed on camera: "It's wicked!" [...] What the TV cameras didn't show was that the Duchess was interviewed exiting an awards ceremony at the Apollo Theatre, home of The Wizard of Oz musical, Wicked. She had been judging a children's writing competition, the Wicked Young Writers' Awards, and used the phrase as a joke.
Just call me a royal apologist.

Would have been more appropriate if she'd been to this.

One assumes you are excluding the part the world we call Asia and its 4 billion odd souls from that sweeping generalisation. They are actually doing quite well at the ’mo. But since we are expected to romp back into a significant historical time when the Raj was the prevailing order perhaps that was intentional??
