  • Simon Grigg, in reply to Sacha,

probably the first punk-influenced track I remember.

Jeez, my bestest friend in the world since them days is a gay man and we never even discussed it; and we discuss everything, all the time. And we danced to Grace for years.

  • Scott Chris, in reply to Simon Grigg,

I was ringing people and asking them around to hear it. It gobsmacked.

Simon, as someone said earlier in the thread the impact an artist has on an individual is an intensely personal and visceral experience which is unique to the individual and is dictated by that individual’s life experience and place in time.

So I guess you were primed for that moment like so many others apparently were. Perhaps it simply went over my head as I was too young to understand it as it happened and by the time I was old enough to understand the revolution I had become desensitized to its power.

Like you say, each to their own. (“but why can’t I see it, it’s so fucking obvious” I hear you say)

Meow. I always thought this was far far better than Counting the Beat, which was pure pop. Although, given the trouble I've already caused tonight with Grace Jones, I probably should shut up now I look at these lyrics.

I was there. I danced to the bloody thing. Nobody cared what she was referring to, to be honest. It was great club music. End of.

might have meant something different to the gay men you were dancing alongside in those clubs, I suspect.

No, not all. You probably did have to be there to understand how utterly stagnant it all (and I mean 'all' in that it also transformed design, fashion, cinema, writing and wider attitudes to much more) had become.

And how much it changed it 'all'.

If you've not seen it, Don Letts fantastic Punk: Attitude says it so much better than I'm perhaps doing:

  • Lilith __, in reply to Russell Brown,

I think there can be no possible debate what that song is about.

Well that’s a relief, frankly: I can stop straining my brain trying to work out how it could actually be about cars. ;-)

I worked in a place where this got a lot of plays on the jukebox by straightlaced-looking people who made me wonder what they thought it was about….

  • Ross Mason,

Just to return to Snoopy's Xmas if I may. The Royal Guardsmen and "Snoopy v the Red Baron" had a significant part to play in NZ Radio. It was banned by the NZBC purely for the word "bloody". IKYN.

It came out just as Hauraki were starting up and it was the number one anthem on Hauraki for months as they stuck it to the corporation.

  • Chris Waugh, in reply to Russell Brown,

Prefacing any genre with the world "Christian" just seems to not work out.

I seem to remember a Cliff Richard song (I was a fan at a certain stage of my life) entitled Why does the Devil have all the good music?. It's a good question.

But as plenty of others, including yourself, have pointed out, an awful lot of Church music actually is really good. It's just the modern pop, rock, etc forms that fall short.
