If you were on the average wage, here in NZ and not taking inflation into account, you would have to work your entire working life of 50 yrs to net that amount after minimal expenses like food and little else.
You're also not taking compounding interest into account. People who save up do usually end up with a big stack from quite modest but constant investment. But most people don't save up. It's really quite hard.
Edit. The fact that it's hard is part of the reason I think compulsory super is a good idea. Then it's not hard, just an accepted, institutionalized idea that almost everyone will retire with a big sack of case. It's really quite a good thing.

I would say that putting money away in property as a form of saving has proved to be quite profitable over the last twenty years or so for many and these are the people that are screaming now and I can understand them, but, we have to change that game. Too much investment has been tied up in property and derivatives where it could have been doing something far more useful, like, er .... Flying Cars or, you know, making neat stuff... and exporting it.
The people complaining about a CGT are the same people who say things like
If I buy a house or a lump of silver and it does not devalue at the same rate as money or other items, those that spent their money on items that do not do so well at holding value want to ensure I have not benefited from my "wise" use of resources, my hard work, my risk of getting it all wrong and going broke, my denying myself and my family many pleasures small and large.
What a great life...

None of my family -self included – stand to gain anything from any investment properties (especially after the CHCH quakes! The 3 investment properties held by my siblings are red or orange-zoned…)
I *like* the idea of a CGT – it’s been too long a-coming. And I am very glad Labour has finally had the nous & uterine fortitude to offer it as a positive step forward for all thinking voters.

Yes, it was almost like a job. Considering how much funnier it was than numerous cartoon strips that people actually do for their job, it seems pretty righteous.

What I do which others don’t is stack each of the same utensil together. Doesn’t take much longer to stack but makes the emptying far quicker.
If everyone would just adopt this, my world would be a happier place. Thank you.
