I'd be looking at anyone who knew my handle with a bit of a sideeye after something like that. Possibilities that spring to mind immediately include someone having you on, or a very short chain of someone who knows someone at head office. If you're feeling generous, talking to a critic directly to get the conversation out of the media and into where it's influential is a legitimate strategy for dealing with a negative media issue, but not when it looks like a misuse of overwhelming state power. And surely if the chief of police was calling everyone who's been critical of him for a friendly chat, he'd have had a busy week.

Putting PRISM resources to "good use"?
-
yeah exactly

A person identifying themself as Police Comissionner Peter Marshall phoned me on my private land line early this afternoon, named me and said that they wished to talk about the Roastbusters case. I immediately said that I had no interest in talking to hjm about it and hung up.
I have no idea how this person found out my phone number and address and was able to identify me.
I was frightened. I don't know if it was his intent to intimidate me, but that was the effect.
I do not believe that this particular exchange is something to be kept private - instead, I think that it should be well known.
However, while my privacy regarding my identity and location has obviously been violated, I request that people do not ask for or offer any clues.

That does sound _so_ unusual I'd suspect mis-judged prank over what you're worried about.
If Police Commissioners were to go intimidating people, that's not how they'd do it.
And they really don't have time to phone up critics and make chitchat - I speak from experience here.

Point. They'd usually get the comms manager to do it - oh, wait...

Even if it was a "prank", they knew how to find me at home. Think about that.
-
Only guessing here, but …
- if this was a prank/crank, they wouldn’t phone back.
- if it was real, then somebody (police PR person) would phone back – to explain. Because if’s it's real they’ll be explaining (or having to lie) to the media soon enough.
So my money’s on prank, FWIW. Though that’s hardly a comfort, I know.
-

I meant prank from someone you knew. I don't know if your name etc is out there enough somewhere for them to attach your views on police to your name/phone number/address?
If it was a police officer, that wouldn't be a prank, that would definitely be harassment. But it would be a mighty stupid police officer that not only phoned you, but pretended to be the commissioner. Way to short track your career.

I see a 77 year old was sexually assaulted in Auckland last night. I can't help wondering if Peter Marshall thinks its vitally important that investigators ask that victim what she was wearing and whether she had had any alcohol that night.
-
Update: Police comms say that Marshall has been responding personally to complaints made via the police website (which I’m told requires contact details).
I’m wondering if he has been reading this site and simply didn’t grasp the line he’d be crossing by directly contacting Kracklite.
But that’s just a guess.
Update: I think we've wory out where the contact came from: not this site. But at best this is clumsy and inappropriate. People don't mceessarily want to be cold-called by the Main Cop.
Kracklite says:
I do think that Marshall has been currently acting in good faith, however
inadequately. Still, being an experienced police officer, he cannot possibly
have been unaware of the existing police culture of misogyny and I do not trust
him because of that. My most generous but honest interpretation is that he's a
fool - however, I know too many women who have been raped and they need to be
protected from fools. -

Well that is bizarre. Maybe this is why he didn't have time to be properly briefed for Campbell Live the other night?

This isn’t (as it was earlier described) “clumsy and inappropriate”, it’s AMAZING. It’s too bad we found out about it this way, because it’s incredible and might be a globally unique degree of access.
I wish it hadn’t initially been presented like a (frankly really obviously bullshit) paranoiac fantasy.

I'm not sure have the CEO of the Police following up every complaint personally is really a good model.

Back off a bit on that, please. Kracklite has been pretty scathing on Marshall here in the past 48 hours. I don't think he was entitled to assume that a complaint lodged on the police website would be personally answered by The Main Cop, and he got very anxious about the call.
-
So I was wrong.
As a PR exercise by the police, this doesn't seem very well thought through. I'll leave it there.

You know what, I really don't want to get a phone call from Marshall if he's just going to repeat the cringe-inducing display of deep denial on Q&A this morning. It would almost be funny how clueless he is about the crisis of confidence in his organization -- FFS, at one point this week the Police Minister said she was getting more reliable information from the media than the Police themselves! -- if it wasn't so damn serious.

That FB Roast Busters page which was up again is now down thanks to a call from a Kiwi director in LA to another Kiwi, Mark D’Arcy, who is now the Global CD of Facebook. He had it disabled immediately.
It’s back up, with the message “They shut us down a second time.”
And: "Facebook, fuck you. We didn't violate any of your rules on our second page. Happy Roasting."
Maybe tell that to Mark D'Arcy.

This however is important and serious and as I would say to anyone, If Marshall calls, talk to him. Tell him how you feel . If you don't want to, tell him to call me. Seriously. I believe in educating those who are ignorant and I firmly believe even Marshall could learn from a lesson or two. I'll give him first hand experience of what it's like to be raped and first hand knowledge of why I wouldn't bother with him or his staff.
Kracklite. don't be intimidated . I'll be your support person. If Marshall chose to ring you, I'd suggest you have constructive views that he may find helpful. Don't underestimate yourself. -
The persecution of Arie-Smith-Voorkamp, and the subsequent blatantly clumsy attempts to intimidate the media, took place on Marshall's watch. In light of that, Kracklite's misgivings seem well justified.

This popped up. PAS gets read.

I certainly will. Well, I'll pass it on. Thanks.

Actually Steve, it's not up. You can enter that name in a field and see the name, but the page is disabled. Show me what you are seeing. Is it under a different name?
Seriously, do a screen shot. -

Here is a link Martin, Roast Busters. I reported it this afternoon but still up so far.

If it was anything like his performance with Campbell, then I don't blame you. Unconvincing at best.
Having him talk to people who can elucidate the problem we see with the police seems far preferably to not having him talk to those people, and instead just hoping it filters up from some junior in a weekly report.
I'm not confident he would listen, but the opportunity going wasted seems a shame.
-
I'll credit Marshall with good, albeit late intentions. I was too freaked out to engage with him at the time, but I appreciate that he is struggling to find out what is right and proper.
I called for his resignation earlier, but I now think that he wants to do well. Still, he advanced through the ranks knowing about the attitudes that existed and didn't challenge them.
I remain very fearful of the police's ability to track down and intimidate their critics.
