Yes I know it is complex about who watches when and why but when there is no reflection of the diversity that makes up society it just gets boring.
Too true. TVNZ for the most part has been a misnomer for some years now – it’s more like TVNS, or Television North Shore.

Congrats, Russell, highly deserved. On a similar but different note, while I was a fan of Media 7, Backbenchers, the Good Word etc, what I really liked were the wide range of science-related docos (most of them from the BBC) that screened on TVNZ7. They were often the sort of lively, enlightening, and hugely accessible sort of thing that used to screen in the weekends on TV1 back in the day. The Brian Cox-hosted ones were particularly infectious. And the local and international news service on TVNZ7 was much more indepth and varied than most of the stuff we get on terrestrial channels at a reasonable hour. Any word on whether those aspects are going to be picked up at all?

In any case, women do not seem to only watch TV shows featuring women any more than Koreans only watch shows featuring people of their culture. The situation is more complex than that.
My Korean wife watches Game of Thrones, House, The Walking Dead, the news, home and garden shows, cooking shows ....
and a whooooooooooooooole lotta shitty Korean TV :)
Personally I don't care if I'm listening to a female expert talking on a topic or a male expert talking on a topic, as long as they are an expert talking on a topic.
This kind of has got me thinking about radio sport which I listen to a lot. 95% of the callers seem to be male. Of them about 50% would talk sense. But given the station regularly runs ads for strip clubs and penis pills I dont see that changing any time soon.
Mind you who gains from strip clubs and penis pills? ;)

Me too!

That's a bit harsh... (from Birkenhead)

Women?

Precisely. I would cringe so badly if I ever heard a woman declare that she was only on the show because she was a woman and as such didn't know anything.

No one is suggesting unqualified pundits on TV, this is a straw-person.
But many of us would like a world in which the diversity of society was reflected in the media and in popular culture. Obviously, getting there is not simple.

I would have... but the initials wouldn't quite line up.

How many of "us", is that gender specific or is it like a straw person?. I'm getting confused as to where the divisions may lie.

You’ve lost me.
I would like to see the same balance of genders, sexualities, races, ages, degrees of physical ability, etc., on TV as I see in the street.
I think I’m not alone in this wish, hence the “us”.Obviously it's not as simple as strong-arming random people into the studio! But I think we should all be working on ways to make our culture more representative. And that includes encouraging people who aren't middle-aged middle-class white heterosexual males into more prominent careers and roles.

Where did you find that gem?
8 Tribes huh.
I'm from Grey Lynn apparently. GREY LYNN???? !!!! FFS. Who wrote that diatribe? They authors HAVE to be North Shore. I see Te Kuiti Pinetrees don't feature. The nearest the tribes go to anything rural is Balclutha. Maori?? Who or where are they??
And they have the gall to make money from this?
-
Hegemony? homogeneity? its' all the same in the end,
like blowing strawmen in the wind. -
Hilary Stace, in reply to
Sometimes it takes a bit more effort to get those of 'us' who are are not from the dominant white middle-class, middle-aged, able-bodied, etc male demographic into the studio. As it is to get more diverse representation in politics, business, academia, encyclopedias or most places of power. It's called affirmative action and it is about assessing expertise differently, not tokenism.

And that’s what it said I was. I don’t know what to think…
eta. It actually said Balclutha/Raglan, I think I will be ok. -

Gosh, I read the summary as satire. But apparently it's market research. Not sure how to feel about that!

Gender and Media 7. The gathering of ( a wee bit more than anecdata I hope) of Media 7. Given the lack of replay TV I have had a quick look at the programmes you can get at and the Media 7 extras just below the full programmes. I zapped through to check the panels only. Of the last seven full programmes 21 males and 2 females appeared. Of 4 Media extras that I could see panels (from Dec 10 to Sept 11, 10ish males and 2 female, one who happened to be playing a ukalele. I suspect that the highlights were over represented by males as well.

It's been covered before by fellow PAS'ers..

In some areas of life perhaps. But whether people currently know about a particular subject area and can speak about it on TV?
-
It's also about how you decide on subjects. I think Jackie's suggestions upthread are perfectly valid topics for critical media attention.
-
he North Shore tribe is populated by self-made men and women – self- starters with large doses of ambition, aspiration, perseverance and achievement. There’s a simple and powerful philosophy underpinning this set of tribal values:
Mortgage fraud.

I agree media's subject choices are critical because a media criticism show is always driven by those. You can't critique what hasn't been aired.

I presume you mean these.
We'd talk about dogs. And houses. And Crown Lynn. And Dads. And dogs.
Unless those subjects become a focus of media coverage, I don't imagine we'll be seeing them on Media3 any time soon.

Jackie Clark, in reply to
Dogs are always in the news. So are houses. And dads. :)

Hilary Stace, in reply to
And Crown Lynn has many possibilities: New Zealand history; ceramics - eg collecting, science, business; crafts; food (which is always in the news from reality TV cooking shows to endless obesity stories). As I said, it's how you frame the subjects. I would even suggest Jackie as a regular panellist as she has so much expertise on so many topical topics - she's sort of the Rosemary McLeod of PublicAddress. And I'm sure Danielle and Emma would be among many others who could be called on for their media expertise or glamour as required.
