  • David Cormack,

remember going to an NZ music showcase a few years back that featured them alongside Brooke Fraser, Evermore and Katchafire... And I'll be honest: I was BORED.

Not a surprise...that is an incredibly insipid line up.

NZ music wise, I'm still listening to http://www.myspace.com/odessamusic Odessa

    Russell

Here's a music tip for you.

    http://74.124.198.47/illegal-art.net/__girl__talk___feed__the__anima.ls___/

the artist is girl talk, a notorious american bedroom mix/slash up producer. The album has been released on the Radiohead- In Rainbows, pay what you want model.

It is at times laugh out loud good.

If you are stuck for something to do in Wellington tonight, we've gota $10 buy in Texas Holdem Poker game going on with a whole bunch of web folk (the Flightless crew), cards dealt at 7pm.

If you want to play just text me on 021 476007

  • Tony Judd,

Shearwater's new record "Rook" is on high rotate at our place at the moment.

There was a great article in Scientific American this week about Jonathan Meiburg's secret life as a ornithologist. He's a superstar muso and a bird nerd.

  • Tom Ackroyd,

    OT now, but

Adrian Sherwood and Tackhead at the powerstation, one of my top three gigs ever.

reminds of my top two gigs ever. On-U Sound at the T&C; and 808 State, same place, Björk guesting. My bass-rattled guts have never forgotten.

  • JA,

Good music? After a month long total television vacation (rehab?) in the complete Six Feet Under DVDs I came across Sia.

Her song Breathe Me plays under the closing scenes of the last episode. So far I am really enjoying her 2008 album 'Some People have Real Problems'. Not sure yet if it's just music to montage to, but there's something about that voice.

Mavis Staples 'We'll never turn back' is something else too.

  • Jake Pollock,

That Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Friends collection looks like something some random (with excellent taste) has cooked up and packaged as a torrent. All of the Waits tracks are available on the comprehensive bootleg series Tales From The Underground, except for the Crystal Gale one, which is from the One From The Heart Soundtrack, and Christmas Sucks, which I've not heard of before.

    I'm such a nerd.

Yeah I've never really 'got' the whole Op-Shop thing... I remember going to an NZ music showcase a few years back that featured them alongside Brooke Fraser, Evermore and Katchafire... And I'll be honest: I was BORED.

Am I alone in finding Brooke Fraser downright sinister? It's not just the Christian thing. It's like she's the dark heart of some precise, calculating machine whose intentions we can only guess at. If ever the Antichrist were loose upon the land, it would look -- and sound -- like Brooke Fraser.

  • Russell Brown,

...and that would be Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra -- although maybe Auckland Philharmonica suits a blues-rock gig... :-)

Gah. Only just had a chance to reconnect and proofread during a 10-min break in a day-long board meeting ...

I also referred to something call "gug reviews" ...

  • Damian Christie,

Speaking of "gug", this clip obviously made for or by Aussies for the purpose of laughing at our silly little accents had me chuckling:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPDvz29C7Bs

Op Shop don't really do it for me (and that song less so, after my two best friends got married to it, and I had to listen to it dozens of times while they practised getting the aisle-walk timing right.) but I've always thought they're pretty good at what they do, including song-craft. I feel the same way about Air Supply. If 'One Day' has had the same effect on a large number of others as it had on my two friends, then why shouldn't it win?

New track I'm enjoying, not sure for how long:Dizzy Rascal's cover of the Ting Tings "That's Not My Name"

Likewise. All of these acts are calculating: they have listened to a lot of music by other people and fashioned a style and an identity out of these influences. The fit neatly and smugly into genres, all the better for the music industry and the MOR radio stations. This is music to watch Stepford wives go by.

Myself, I shall be watching Lambretta Suede and the Motel 6 at the Thirsty Dog.

  • Idiot Savant,

Send me a gug, she said. I'll review it.

I think someone ha already beaten you to it:

It was a paw, fully two feet and a half across, and equipped with formidable talons. Alter it came another paw, and after that a great black-furred arm to which both of the paws were attached by short forearms. Then two pink eyes shone, and the head of the awakened Gug sentry, large as a barrel, wabbled into view. The eyes jutted two inches from each side, shaded by bony protuberances overgrown with coarse hairs. But the head was chiefly terrible because of the mouth. That mouth had great yellow fangs and ran from the top to the bottom of the head, opening vertically instead of horizontally.

    Naturally, there's a plushie.

  • Geoff Lealand,

I have a growing collection of cover-mount compilations from music mags Uncut and The Word. Once I have put them on my iPod, they gather dust.

I made the same offer last year but if you would like a free bunch of these, just email me at lealand@waikato.ac.nz and I will send a padded envelope full.

You often find little treasures in such compilations--it was were I first heard Arcade Fire.

  • Kebabette,

I got all excited last night when I found this 80s classic on youtube
Do it again - Wall of Voodoo. What a fruity surreal number it is.

Agree with Sofie on Cock and Bull Kid.

Fuck Dress "Suburban Nietzsche freak" is nutty - "God is dead so I listen to Radiohead" .... "I've got a will to power so I don't have to shower" ... I'm badly misquoting no doubt.

and revisiting Serge Gainsbourg and The Cardigans and Depeche Mode.

  • Damian Christie,

This from Popbitch on the god awful Timbaland/Cornell project:

    >> Timbagarden <<
    When r&b meets grunge

The first track from the collaboration between
Chris Cornell and Timbaland is out now. Timbaland
had approached Cornell's record label to suggest
he produce the grunge star's third solo album,
    but Cornell wasn't interested.

To get the gig, Timbaland got hold of Cornell's
mobile number and called him up personally to
ask him to let him produce the record. He
rhapsodied about Soungarden's early albums on
Sub Pop, before they signed to a major, to
the extent that Cornell realised the producer
was a genuine fan and the two bonded. Let's
hope disappointing first track, Long Gone,
is not representative of the album.

  • Testcard,

Timbaland and Chris Cornell?? The most ill-advised collaboration since Dr Dre and Burt Bacharach, surely.

I just hope 'Black Hole Sun '08 (Timbaland Remix') isn't on the cards.

  • George Darroch,

Not exactly new, but this sends shivers down my spine Joe Higgs, singing old school beautiful reggae.

I've also been thrashing Cat Power's Jukebox, Bon Iver, Emilie Simon, and The Coup's feel good Marxist party hip hop.
