  • Jennifer B,

Muse and The Streets reminds me of Scribe & co at the BDO 2007 which incidentally I thought rocked the house. Nothing like a bit of bluster mixed with searing guitar. No-one much agreed with MHO tho' I seem to remember. Didn't Muse play that year's BDO too?

Micah P Hinson & The Red Empire Orchestra has crept into my heart. The music is a bit down at times but there's something very charming about it, him and the whole shebang.

Heh. And I thought Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson was going to be the most unusual collaboration of the year...

  • Grant McDougall,

Adrian Sherwood and Tackhead at the powerstation

I was at that gig as well; it was my 27th birthday and I also reviewed it for Real Groove.
A Japanese band called Audio Active went on first. They were all dressed in white boiler suits and their first song was a humungous drone with the lyrics "free marijuana, free marijuana, free marijuana...". They were great.

Sherwood and Tackhead were amazing, great stuff.

It was also incredibly loud. I didn't realise how shot my hearing was until the next morning, when I bumped into a mate in Corner Records (RIP), who'd also been at the gig and the shop assistant came up to us and asked us to stop yelling at each other. :)

Loving the Joe Higgs track, well done.

Right, let's not muck around, it's Friday so two very different party tunes making most excellent use of the mother ucker (as FotC's might say).

Pigeonhed' Battleflag gives it up to the Soprano's.

Mylo's Drop the Pressure for any '80s heads in the house.

Not sure which parties are the ones to pimp tonight, but if you haven't eaten and drunken at Duke Carvell's Swan Lane Emporium yet, then do.

    Chris Cornell produced by Timbaland

Ehhh. Yeah, it really sucks, but it's sort of generically shitty. I was expecting something a lot more egregious, somehow.

  • Sacha,

I remember looking up at Tackhead on that stage and thinking how bloody lucky I was to be experiencing guitar, bass and drums played by the top handfull of their respective professions at the time. And yes, the ringing lasted for days.

    is right.

my jaw was so wide, agape with shock, that a nearby 4 year old boy ran up and tried to stuff a tomastankengine toy into it.

  • Adrian Wills,

Am I alone in finding Brooke Fraser downright sinister? It's not just the Christian thing. It's like she's the dark heart of some precise, calculating machine whose intentions we can only guess at. If ever the Antichrist were loose upon the land, it would look -- and sound -- like Brooke Fraser.

Yeah couldn't agree more. And I'm sure I remember reading that she was 'bored' of New Zealand and thought she'd gotten too big for it... Yeah ok Brooke, sure thing. I can imagine her introducing herself to an American record producer with a sentence deserving of nothing more than a Tui Billboard: "Well I'm really talented and in New Zealand I'm a huge celebrity, I had to leave because I just couldn't do any better there" Yeah Right.

"Mate, I bought the ski-racks because I needed to carry the Jousting sticks... they're long form." If ever there was a radio ad that deserved a silver scroll...

I wouldn't say she's sinister, as such. However, regardless of how utterly mediocre her music is, I will always forgive her. Why, you ask ?
Because her father is the truly great Bernie Fraser, that's why.

Most of my favourite gigs ever are New Zealand bands but for foreign muck, Kraftwerk, Sydney, 1980 (ish) does the trick, or the last night of The Elvis & The Attractions, Hammersmith Palais circa 84/85..1 1/2 hours of encores.

Listening to: the Mark E mix on Resident Advisor is very big right now, as is the new Paul Weller, the new Henrik Schwarz, Dixon & AME, Toby Tobias and hoping the new, finished copy, of The LEDS 2nd turns up this week in the mailbox.

Yep, and it almost was that calculated, the launch of BF. There was a minor bidding war for her as I recall at the time she was signed but there was a definite feeling of a creatable easily defined and sold product in the offing. It was very much a case of a label having a taste for female singer songwriters after the huge success of Bic Runga. But the gulf between Bic and BF was glaring...Bic had soul and was always coolly unique , Brooke has little of either.

That radiohead article is very interesting however impatience probably had a bit to do with it... didn't their server go down because it was so popular?

As if Radiohead care. Anyway you look at it for them it was a massive and resounding success. They made more money than they'd ever made before because they owned the master, had a huge publicity blitz and a number one US album. All in a shitty time for the old school music industry.

Tom Yorke is grinning in that story for a reason.

only enough to abandon it as a viable business model and relinquish it to the novelty act that it was, got em good attention, worked once, not so much the next time someone tried it.

    Me too.
Chatted with some of the Audio Active guys later on cause I had seen them a couple of times at Liquid Room in Shinjuku so I knew they were a good warm-up act.

Missed African Head Charge, but one of my mates still raves about that gig.
