  • Isabel Hitchings,

I can confirm that David tolerated a fairly vigorous hugging with great good grace.

We've checked our house and it looks OK (though with the amount of liquifaction around I fear for our piles). We saw one of our two cats (the diabetic one who I was most worried about). Out here with the Rolleston rellies and running water and flushing loos I feel a bit like I'm cheating but there's still too much water outside and not enough in to want to take small boys back there.

A lighter moment … what sort of plants might the owner have been growing in the attic of this now-ruined house?

Ha! Ever the quick eye. :)

Ian Dalziel is okay! Just confirmed with David.

    Yay!

Excellent news.Shit it is amazing to hear snippets of good news and I know my Dad wont even mention his dislocated thumb accident today as Christchurch will seem more important to him. But I know dad :)

Someone else spotted it. I just performed an expert appraisal.

Those are definately young maple leaf trees.

I am not available to give evidence however.

Christchurch, can I just tell you, because I don't think you hear it enough, that you are bloody legends? Really.

It's because of the opposite seasons you see between the hemispheres. The trees become confused if they are experiencing summer when it should be winter and vice versa so the growers of them were merely creating a controlled habitat for them. ;)

On a more serious note I donated some money last night to the Red Cross page which was linked to in the main post, and linked it today to facebook and elsewhere but noticed that it either wasn't loading, or else was very slow which I guess is due to the volume of traffic it's getting. Which is good ... kinda.

  • Lilith __,

Regarding the rumour that Sumner is being evacuated: parts of the suburb only. Most homes there are in no danger from slips and rockfalls. My Mum and sister who live in Sumner were unaware there was any evacuation happening at all.

It's very hard to know what's going on for some, I think. People can't access the internet, cos of no power, and are relying on the radio, and friends like me who sit and block up the phonelines searching for info for them :)

Could they grow maples in Central Otago or Southland?

  • Craig Ranapia, in reply to Megan Wegan,

I want to make a joke, but I am being nice, so I won’t.

I've had one or two decorous debauches at the Grand Chancellor (and the usual tedium of party conferences), and part of me thinks "well, it would have been really interesting to experience that" while another screeches "are you fucking HIGH?"

  • Stephen Judd,

I will happily pay a reasonable donation to hug Dr Haywood, as long as we can make it a proper manly A-frame one. I am over 40, you know.

  • giovanni tiso,

A David Haywood Hug Booth! I think we're all set for this fundraiser. It must travel to Wellington.

You'll be well caught up on the fact that Christchurch doesn't need blood nor stuff, and the best thing to do is to donate money. But there's one exception: Women's Refuge, whose building was destroyed, is soliciting donations of

new bedding, nappies, sanitary items, non perishable food for example. Please send your offer to info@refuge.org.nz and we will be in contact. Thank you!

Failing that I'm sure they would gladly take your money through the usual channel.

A good way to follow the Women's Refuge earthquake relief is via their Facebook page.

  • Emma Hart,

Indeed, I have been reading my way through this thread, and quietly sniffling. Yous guys are awesome, and I will admit (though don't tell my family) that the hardest thing about the whole 'no power' dealy is missing out on all of this.

Also, I have just seen the first pictures. I have cried, a lot. This was so much scarier, and so much more devastating, and so many people I know have lost their houses this time.

I will write more fully later. I would do quite a lot for a hot shower.

Honestly this time... if we didn't have cats, we'd have left town today.

  • Che Tibby,

god. what a day. i get back over here after reading someone calling coddingswallop a cnut over at pundit, and we're talking pot growing in ceilings and big group hugs with haywood.

it's just all so bloody topsy-turvy.

sure was glad to put the wee man into his own bed in peace though. it's these small things.

Snap. My sister from Dunedin wants to come and fetch me away, but I weigh up spending 5 and a half hours in a car with a meowing cat, each way, against the hot showers and holiday...and I stay put.
