Good thoughts here, Russell. They resonate with the paper I have written for The Future of Journalism conference in Cardiff later this year.
All ok to take a bunch of my students into the bowels of TVNZ on Aug 5, for a Media 7 record?
Flying to Wellington tomorrow for the funeral for Rosie Jackson, which will be rather sad, A week or more on, it still is hard to take.

Yes.

My sympathies. That must be really, really hard.

The ABC's recent report on the future of newspapers (which briefly mentions NZ) is interesting:
-
They are going to charge for satire.
That should work.

Great to see that TVNZ7 is now on Sky (Channel 97). Must have happened while we were overseas. Will be watching on Wednesday night.
Incidentally, does anyone publish the listings for TVNZ 6 and 7. Darned if I've been able to find them anywhere.
I feel a campaign to the Listener coming on.

The listings have been subject to an unfathomable commercial dispute between TVNZ and APN since the channels launched. But I believe TV Guide has them.

3410,
does anyone publish the listings for TVNZ 6 and 7?
See here.

See here.
Holy crap. Who knew?

Holy crap. Who knew?
Ooh me! Pick me!
3410 knew.

3410 knew.
That sounds like the end of a sci-fi movie.
-
surprisingly there is also this
-
3410,
That sounds like the end of a sci-fi movie.
Sure, it's unexpected, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it Science fiction !

Oh, and I forgot this from Bernard's bit on keeping costs "brutally low":
We drink instant coffee.
Well, fuck that. Where's Murdoch? I'm signing up for the project.
(Perhaps I can help Bernard there ...)

That vid from ABC - is that the smell of denial? At least, from Mr David Simon, of unverified fear. It's the same as the copyright argument - "Change is bad, fear change" "We're not making as much money as we did, so someone must be blamed. It's the damn bloggers!".
There's a place for news - of course there is. But it won't be your grandfather's newspaper. The businesses that recognise this and adapt their business models will survive - the others won't.
I'm not advocating that one is better than the other, I'm merely acknowledging the situation. What the media barons think of as the status quo is not any more. But rather than recognise that they have to change to survive, they're calling on Governments to regulate, they're putting up paywalls, they're blaming everyone but themselves and their short-term-profit-focus that's brought them to this point.
Good luck with that.

Off topic: I cannot see the video in the post, its just a square with the pic icon, running the latest IE (v8). Any ideas?

We drink instant coffee.
Well, fuck that
He's removing his very humanity just to survive in new-world journalism.

Thanks for those listings. Will have to break the habit of a lifetime and buy the TV Guide, I suppose. I need hard copy!!
-
Also, I wonder how the APs and Reuters do in this new world? That source-journalism continues to be necessary, I just wonder if the newspaper folk are the middle men aggregators that they claim to despise?
Source-journalism plus online-whatever-the-hell-flavour-you'd-like-it-opinioned-in seems like a leaner model. -

It's worth it just for the letters to the editor; hilarious!
-
We drink instant coffee.
There's cheap & cheerful, and then there's cheap & nasty.
-
What more proof do we need that the business model is unsustainable. :)

I believe TV Guide has them.
TV Guide certainly has them. And, as Phil notes, TVNZ.co.nz. And your Freeview decoder, of course :-)

You may now be thinking that if Murdoch could manipulate his digital pages with the same ease with which Amazon can delete 1984 from your kindle, that's a bit scary.
<obscure thinking>
And on a related line of thought. It struck me as strange that the cycle of media is complete when media shapes and controls the distribution of knowledge/information. At the dawn of print, wasn't it about setting these things free in some way or other ?

a huge band of amateur, untrained, unqualified bloggers who have swarmed over the internet pouring out columns of unsubstantiated "facts" and hysterical opinion.
Is the elephant in the room that he's absolutely fucking right?
The good is a teeeeeeeny tiny minority of the vast churning oceans of shit that make up the blogosphere.
Bad news is, even this tiny minority massively outnumbers the decent old media journalists.
So, hmm.
It was the classic Cold Fusion mess.
This is hardly fair. Coldfusion is probably the best language I've ever used to build a website. The problem is that it's SO great and easy to use, that... ungifted... people are able to get a site that works. Get someone who knows what they're doing to use it, and you get great tools built really fast.
So you know, just saying don't blame the tools.

But it won't be your grandfather's newspaper.
Nor that of my youth. The point was neatly illustrated today with the DomPost publishing a facsimile of the "wrap-around supplement to The Dominion to mark man's greatest achievement"
16 pages. Content. Oh my, the content. As rich as Whittakers.
And so different from 2009. Sure black and white, low res photos, basic graphics. But lots and lots of information. The front page wholly taken up with a photo of Aldrin on the moon and some small text boxes. Plenty of wire stories and agency imagery. But also a page of readers letters, Eric Heath's cartoon, a column from the editor ("A news medium is seldom in awe of its role. A journalist only occasionally sees himself joining in the writing of history."), a radical view from WP Reeves, opinion pieces from various angles by half a dozen other Kiwis, kids views and writings from Clifton Terrace primary school, stories with local angles. Not one advert.
How _very_ different from today's newspapers.
