Of course, as a woman, I clearly know nothing about being a sports fan.
Laughed so hard I scared the heck out of my daughter. According to that guy I should support... Taranaki? Oh, wait, that would make me a boy. But I don't have any sparkly pink shoes. OMG, I must be inter-sexed.

I suspect so is he.

/slightly bitter, yes.
Agreed. Gender's not determinative, it's obversly correlated in rugby perhaps, but that's for lots of other reasons. I've been to plenty of netball internationals that prove women are passionate and vocal partisans and competitors. I'm sure you didn't need another voice, but thought I'd chip in my five cents... incidentally, I reckon the foremost commentators on NZ rugby are the Dropkicks, Grant Fox, Spiro Zavos and Tracey Nelson.
-
C'mon, the man is dealing with a whole new paradigm. He's on a journey...
Joining the discussion from the end, I thought you were talking about Hadyn going to the cricket.
Ha! That's about right. I even had to ask my friends where the best place to sit in the Caketin was (for a long cricket game)

Aw shucks
and finally, the first tie in the NFL since 2002

Don't forget the Jedi and the alternative rugby commentary. His stuff is highly entertaining.

Looks like Wellington is going to live up to the 'Fine and cloudy periods. Strong, gusty northerlies.' forecast.
Yeah right.Felix, are you the same F Marwick of Newstalk ZB?
-
so the women's tennis at ASB didn't get a look in? TV1 has it on most of the afternoon?
-

Agreed but the guy's main point kind of got lost in the sexism.
Proper sports fans go through hell supporting rubbish teams that make their lives a misery week in, week out. It's like a bad marriage where your loyalty is returned with a decent kick in the guts every Saturday afternoon. You should leave but you don't because you're a fan and to leave would present you with an alternative that's even worse then sticking with the shabby crowd of no-hopers that you've pinned your badge to.
Nope, you stick with them for that rare moment, when you least expect it, that they actually pick their sorry arses up and roll one of the big boys. Then you can run around the house making the gobbler gesture and shouting at the neighbours basking in your momentary superiority of being one of the die hards who didn't walk when things turned to shit, that you had some kind of superior knowledge that told you these sad sacks were capable of turning it on at some point and pulling off that unlikely victory. And you live through that moment during the many many long fruitless weeks and months of rotten play and pissy results, the failures and relegations until the next mythical time in the future that something good actually happens.
That's what being a sports fan is all about, everyone else is just a watcher.
-

A bloke I worked with in London was a Wimbledon supporter.
He described to me the period where the Dons clung to a 1-0 lead over Liverpool in their first (and undoubtedly last) FA Cup final as "the worst hour of my life". You could see what he meant.
-
You could see what he meant.
Indeed, and I bet he's still talking about it. The Hammers beat Chelsea 1-0 a few years back and our star player, the mercurial part-time fascist, Paolo Di Canio made fools of them in a display of cheek and style that gave them no respect at all. The Russian Oil Hoes fans would've just shrugged but it's a result dear to all Hammers fans hearts and always will be.
-

Would've but it hadn't started until I had to go back to work.

As a Bay of Plenty supporter I know exactly what you mean. Winning the Ranfurly Shield off Auckland was the best moment of my tenure as a fan.
That guy commenting on the Dropkicks though was a cock

I've been supporting Canterbury Basketball for nearly 30 years (so, um, longer than I've been alive, you realise). When I was a kid, it was the halcyon days if Clyde "the glide" Huntley and John "Dutchie" Rademakers. (and John Hill, and Gilbert Gordon and Terry Brunel)
They haven't won a championship since 1992, and yet, when I last went to a game, they beat Waikato, and that was HUGE!
It's one of the reasons I am so excited about the Breakers' season. It's been hard going as a fan, but it is starting to turn around. Woot!
And Hadyn, you don't need my advice, and Emma's already given it, but wrap up warm, and make Dom get the beers in.

Ahhh... Another one emerges from the closet.
-

More advice Haydn doesn't need. After about the third Mexican wave, stop joining in, and start covering your head with your arms to protect it from the beer.

Agreed, just wanted to plug Dropkicks separately. I think the RRT has lost a little by losing the Ginger.
-
What do you think about the Christchurch Cougars then?
That it's a stupid name, but it is still better than the Tactix
I despair of my home province, and its ability to name things.
The thing is, basketball in Canterbury always seemed to be able to pull in enough people, and I'm sad the Rams are gone (I used to know one of the guys in the Ram suit).
Cantabrians seem to have become apathetic about actually attending sport (even All Black tests) and sports teams need people through the door to survive.
Incidentally, I was at that Saints/Waikato final last year, and what with the packed stadium, and the loud crowd (i could have lived without the cowbells) and the excitement, it was like basketball in the old days. I don't know how you translate that down South, but someone needs to.

At least at the Caketin, they aren't throwing anything else in the air, unlike when I was regularly attending rugby games at Lancaster Park*.
*And no, I will never call it anything else.

Why not? Though I'm also wary of corporates attempting to buy culture by simply attaching their name to important stuff like sports, wasn't Lancaster just another conniving squatocrat?
-
wasn't Lancaster just another conniving squatocrat?
You know, that may be a fair point. I don't know that I even know who Lancaster was.
-

Don't you mean Saints/Giants? Or am I getting confused? I thought Nelson won :L

I still don't get why people would throw away their beer. (though I suppose beer is a very loose term for what they serve at the Caketin
-

At least they've stopped throwing it at the actual players.

And why would you? I had understood that the ground at which Test Cricket was played in Christchurch was Lancaster Park. As a sop to traditionalists at the time the naming rights were sold, they only sold the naming rights to the stadium , not the ground.
You watch the All Blacks play rugby on Lancaster Park from Jade Stadium.
An excellent question for pub quizzes!
