Field Theory: He's good, but I still don't like him

I forget who, but one of them was suggesting that the stance & throw of Broom's runout indicated that the Blackcaps might have had some training from someone involved in Baseball.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but haven't we had that training happening for over a year now?
Worse than that, it's the same guy that Australia use.

for Haddin cheating
The game was played 28 years to the day since the underarm incident.
"Giovanni thinks Haddin is a scumbag"
I thought Haddin probably had one of his best games as a keeper, until the Broom moment. It is remarkable how the Australian cricketers try and operate in the grey area. Ponting attitude against the Indians when it came to suspect catches was that his fielders were always right.

On the tennis; I read a quote about 12 months ago from (I think) Nadal's coach saying that once he beat Federer on grass, he'd never lose to him again.
On the cricket; Anyone else seeing Haddin-gate coming back to bite us big time?
-
What they're referring to -- and they should be competent enough to just say so -- is his first-class record. He has a century and a dozen fifties at that level, and averages 26.
Yup he is a good 1st class batsman in NZ, against NZ 1st class bowlers.
As for getting better last night - I'm not sure he has the time that really good batsmen have. He does have good technique and can smack the ball very hard on occasion. But against test class bowlers he just doesn't have the time that real batsmen seem to have. He may get there but from my expert couch-derived knowledge of the game - not a chance :).
All of which is to say that he is a good bowler and deserving of his place in the side as a bowler. And please stop talking him up as a batsman.

One thing you have to say for the Aussie cricketers - they know how to create interest in what could have been a boring the interlude between Aus/SA series.
Now we can all watch for more Aussie cheats and pull apart every action and word Haddin says :).
Looking forward to the next match!

not a chance :).
Oh and I would LOVE to be very wrong.

In what sense? Rarking the Aussies up or seriously copping it if we're ever caught cheating ourselves?
-
Wow. I was on the tennis at the time and didn't actually catch it till now. That's pretty much indefensible.
I just watched it myself. Literally jawdropping.
Most of the time I play up the 'Australian cricketers suck' rivalry thing for a joke, but that is *appalling*.

I can’t see Haddin Gate (I prefer the term “Hand of Dog”) coming back to bite us. Well, not compared to our lack of a decent top order for example.
And given that it’s had a hand in the ACB “resting” Ponting it should work in our favour.
-
Maradona Haddin perhaps?

Watching 'Inside Cricket' on Fox last night (I'm in Sydney) was irritating. NZ described as a 2nd or 3rd grade team, and of course the first 5 wickets to fall were because the Aussies threw their wickets away, nothing about good fielding or bowling. I could go on...
They didn't defend Haddin, but didn't criticise him either.

Nah, cos we actually have a pretty good wicketkeeper.
(Contributing to the former? What, me?)

Maradona Haddin perhaps?
Diego Armando Haddin could work.

A few games back, commentators were talking about one of the Aussie bowlers, and said, 'you have to remember, a lot of those wickets were taken against teams like Bangladesh and New Zealand'.
This is why it's so much fun when we beat the bastards.

The references by the Ch9 commentary team the other night to “I beat the Kiwis are enjoying the sun on their backs after all the rain they’ve had recently” were quite funny.
Until about the 10th time.

Things I'd like to see on a scoresheet:
Brad Haddin, hit wkt, 0

I think it will fire them up over and above the hurt pride of losing. I wouldn't be surprised to see us cop a shoeing this Friday. Hope not, and I think Dan V took exactly the right attitude in telling it like it was, but I can see it galvanising the Aussies.

From the SMH:
Australia are set to use the Brad Haddin-Daniel Vettori spat as motivation when they bid to break a long losing streak on Friday.
Because they're wounded that anyone could think that they could cheat ...
From Israel:
Things couldn't get much worse for the Australian cricket team right now, losing a Test series at home, losing a one-day series at home and now they're on a four-game losing streak.
But after Sunday night's two-wicket loss to New Zealand, Ricky Ponting finds himself once again having to defend his team's integrity.
From India:
A thrashing by the South Africans, defeat to the Kiwis in the opener, allegations of cheating against a player and captain choosing to opt for rest when the chips are down is new Australia that nobody probably wants to see.
From South Africa:
Haddin clearly had his gloves in front of the stumps and appeared to have dislodged the bails himself as the ball entered his hands.
If a wicketkeeper’s gloves are in front of the stumps it should be declared a no-ball.
And, not least, Timaru:
The fact is that a dismissal that was not legitimate was claimed by Haddin, with numerous replays making it clear that the ball from Clarke was passing over the bails, but that Haddin's fingertips were in front of the stumps and he brushed the bails, dislodging them, as he pulled his hands back. Haddin is seen to be looking down at the stumps at the moment the bails come off, before wheeling away to celebrate the dismissal, though the celebration seems somewhat muted from his side, suggesting he may have been aware it was illegitimate.
That last one was the Timaru Herald's actual editorial!

I want to see it very, very much. My bitter n' twisted loathing of the Australian cricket team far outweighs my support for the Black Caps. NZ could have lost to the West Indies for all I cared. But against this lot, my feelings for "Punter" and the Pantheon are as warm (and as petty) as Stephen Jones' for the All Blacks.
Incidentally the TAB still have Australia as clear favourites to win the series. I suspect they're right, but it's not because of Bad Haddin and Glove Story ... it's just, we're not very good.
But never mind. Their self-proclaimed new victim status and siege mentality is entertainment enough.

We watched the replay on Monday morning (first time I had seen MySky HD and I am now in love). One of the commentators did say that it should be a no-ball because his gloves were in front (a rule I never knew) and that the umpire should have called it.

Also how right was I in the original post:
So we won, but have something to grumble about, in other words a perfect win for New Zealand!

I think it's a member of the NZ softball team who helps with their fielding. There was talk when the softballers were going to... Argentina?... that one of their members would be delayed because they were with the cricket team.
But why oh why does every NZ commentator have to insist that he's a "much better batsman than his average"
I think, particularly in one day cricket, particularly for bowlers, you have to come out in the last few overs and sacrifice your wicket for the good of quick runs. For some that won't affect their average (er, Martin), for others, you could imagine if they had another 10, 15 overs to play with they would have a higher average.
Take Franklin for example. Great domestic form recently, average internationally with the bat. Part of the reason is he plays higher in the order for Wellington so gets more time/options. Part will no doubt be the lesser quality of the NZ domestic bowling scene.
After watching the video of Haddin dismissing Broom, Ponting's comments in response to vettori's look stupid. "I haven't seen the video, but Daniel Vettori is right off the martk...". Maybe if he'd watched the footage first he might have looked less like a dickhead in hindsight.
