Field Theory: Aiming for 2,000

  • Joanna,

Audience participation is the greatest. We say dress up to match your team! And we also have a double pass to give away on PPP.

(No, I'm totally not link-whoring. If I was doing that, I'd tell the world about You Are So Entertaining...)

Yeah but mine's easier to win :P

That's because Amy and I are classy discerning ladies :P

Although I would be interested to hear how people choose which team to support. For me, I'm Smash Malice 4 Life because the first bout I saw I made that decision because Rocket Queen is my favourite Guns'n Roses song evah.

  • Amy Galvani,

I still haven't decided who to support. Which sucks because I'd love something to yell about and smack downs to give.

So you reckon they'll get 2,000 punters Hadyn? That sounds like an awfully large crowd for an emerging sport. Is it? Like how many people does the Kiwi wrestling get?

  • Joanna,

Kiwi Pro Wrestling is like, 400 I think, in Wellington? And the audience is almost entirely bogans and kids. We're the only hipster-ish contingent, whereas the Roller Derby audience is amost entirely hipstery.

  • Goldie Scorn,

But but but ... Rocket is now in Brutal Pageant so surely the support should shift! (I know its hard, but I now have pageant in my blood).

No no! I love the game, not the playa! And if you knew how many red and pink clothes I own as opposed to my single piece of leopardskin, you'd know how incredibly hard that is for me to be this committed to the team, but I am!

  • Thigh Voltage,

Getting really excited for Saturday! Spent the evening flyering in Cuba Street and the reaction was pretty good.

Jo is a textbook example of:

It's the sport for women, for geeks, for rock-a-billys, for punks, and for anyone who might not like sport

She rolled her eyes extravagantly at me and Hadyn talking about rugby at lunch a few weeks ago, and yet, she's as animated as anything about derby.

Maybe she just doesn't realise it is sport...

  • Simon Poole,

Sadly, I was rostered onto Dad duty before I found out we were switching to the TSB Arena, so if I'm lucky I'll get to be backstage.

Civil Offense is going to rock hard.

No Plaid the Impaler? Still I imagine you'll have the wee one in skates soon right?

  • Ruby Deathskates,

So you reckon they'll get 2,000 punters Hadyn?

If we get 2000 punters, I will do a special little dance after Magenta Diamond's half time show. Cover your children's eyes, it will be a sight. Promise.

We have turned so many people away at our two previous bouts that we just had to go large, and the only place in central Wellington that has the facility for us is the TSB. That is one hell of an exciting upsize.

No matter how many people come, the game is going to be great. That said, we think that derby can be huge here in the Richter City and we're going hard to tap into the sport crowd (Hadyn has been blazing a trail there, for which he receives my eternal gratitude).

    As an aside -
It's really hard to find a venue to skate in here in Wellington - for training or for bouts. The lack of venues has been the single most difficult thing we've had to deal with, and it's we're still struggling. If anyone knows of an empty warehouse or something similar with a wooden/polished concrete floor the size of a couple of basketball courts in the central city, get in contact and we will give you special derby love for all eternity.

Is there a reason you can't use any of the inline hockey rinks in the city? Too expensive?

    What?!

Ok if anyone was thinking, "maybe I won't go", change your mind NOW! Magenta Diamond is awesome!

  • Simon Poole,

Kyle: There are none suitable that I'm aware of. Upper Hutt is a long way to take 20 people for training twice a week (Although the surface is awesome, and there are often people up there for the Saturday open-skate) and is expensive as hell to hire for private use, and the surface in Kilburnie is that interlocking plastic-mat stuff. Not quite grippy enough for our purposes - polished concrete really is the best, if possible. Not quite sure how much Kilburnie was charging, but as they're a council-owned rec centre they had a pretty busy weekly schedule as it is.

Hadyn: Unfortunately not. Miss G was pretty furious that she couldn't go to the last bout, so I promised her that she'd get to ref the next one. And now it's at the TSB Arena. *facepalm* Here's hoping that #3 goes off big-time, because I'll be back for that!

As for having Sam in skates? Let's see if we can get him using shoes properly first. Skates will follow (closely)!

I need Sam reffing so I can get back to bouting.

Just occasionally drift on to the track and hit someone. Then call them for the foul.

We could probably arrange for someone in the crowd to get unruly?

Well, I did just discover that if skaters don't get off the track when we blow the whistle to penalty them off we're allowed to wade in to get them.

"What do you mean you didn't hear the whistle? I'm sure I blew it..."
