  • Matthew Poole,

two word solution - gaffer tape!
(there's even a clear one now!)

NOOOOOOOO! How, then, can one possibly make that timeless joke: "What do the force and duct/gaffer tape have in common? They have a light side, and a dark side, and they hold the universe together"?

So, so wrong, on so many levels.

  • Kumara Republic,

@Damian: ever thought about "recycling" the CRT on TradeMe? Works for me when I have surplus computer parts that I've outgrown or no longer need.

  • Mark Thomas,

I'm planning on getting an HTC Wildfire next payday... Google Maps looks very handy, and doing the odd bit of email and browsing until data gets a lot cheaper. Anyone used one of these?

You'll notice that google have deactivated turn-by-turn navigation in NZ (you can still get directions using google maps though). If you want to enable the navigation, there is a hacked version of google maps which works very well. I've been using a HTC Desire as my in-car navigation/mp3/hands free phone/distraction in NZ and oz for the past few months and it is fantastic.

  • recordari,

We were all warned this week about burglars trolling Facebook and Twitter for easy marks. I kind of have this vision of someone compiling an inventory of PAS IT toys for later use.

FWIW: We sold everything. I am now typing this on my ZX81.

  • Ian Dalziel,

Back to BASIC for the Beagle Boys...

I am now typing this on my ZX81.

Meanwhile back at the hideout Megabyte Beagle looks up from his orange iMac screen:
"Hey 176-761, this guy must have a tape deck!"

  • Damian Christie,

Damian, my solution to the same dilemma was to move the CRT to the bedroom

Dude, either your CRT isn't as much of a Death Star as mine, or your bedroom is massive. This baby sits on a customized stand thingy and takes up an entire corner of our lounge.

(And I already bought a nifty little LCD for the bedroom, which I can plug the laptop into to watch all my downloaded TV programmes in bed, plus it has built in freeview etc. As a result we spend more time watching TV in bed than in the lounge now.)

@DeepRed - the trouble is I'd probably get $100 for it on trademe if I was lucky, LCD screens are so cheap these days. And selling something that largely fulfills its purpose for $100, so that I can spend up to $4000 replacing it, again, it just don't make sense...

  • Damian Christie,

    @BenWilson

I'm loathe to destroy working devices too.

Yeah my stereo amp is about 20 years old. It started getting a bit touchy, one channel was cutting out. I was tempted to dump it in favour of something shiny and new, but I got out the screwdriver set, pulled it apart and tightened a few things, and now its good as new.

Old microwaves seem to last a lot longer than new ones too. I've had much more luck with hand-me-down big clunkers with faux wood exteriors than those cheap ones from Briscoes.

"Hey 176-761, this guy must have a tape deck!"

The way my iPhone has been running these past weeks, I've half expected it to say "PRESS PLAY ON TAPE"...

  • Hilary Stace,

It's quite scary, having to bust things out on the telly with not much practice in front of a panel of Maori MPs, but that's the whole point eh - gotta give it a go :)

Keep it up, You're a good role model for the rest of us shy pakehas.
