  • Hard News: Awesome,

giovanni and Obama have it right on this. There is so much more to criticise about the Palin choice than what her children do or do not get up to. Big oil and the lies over the "Bridge to Nowhere" would be a good start.

    Obama:

"I have said before and I will repeat again: People's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as a governor and/or her potential performance as a vice president. So I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18 and how a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn't be a topic of our politics." [...]

"I am offended by that statement. There is no evidence at all that any of this involved us," he said. "Our people were not involved in any way in this, and they will not be. And if I thought there was somebody in my campaign who was involved in something like that, they would be fired."

  • Hard News: Go Us,

You call it being maverick or cynicism, I call it ensuring change.

That's very reassuring sagenz. I think we needed that, because less wise heads than your own have been calling it "an insane choice".

  • Hard News: Go Us,

Re the Key / Obama thing...I think there is a possible "Stories" thread here.

Who would you most like to be a "little bit like" and what would that "bit" be?

    Me, I'm thinking Errol Brown.

  • Field Theory: Out-yelled by Children,

My girl and I got there an hour before kick-off. I knew the queue problems must have kicked in when the crowd went from about 5,000 at 2:35 (kick off) to a respectable 15,000 by half time.

The downside was that we had well and truly scoffed our bag of 16 donuts by the start.

NZRU take note: afternoon games grow the sport.

Even a 6pm start would be more family friendly. Especially for the Friday games.

Don't know how Wellington won game that so handsomely, they hardly saw the ball and were monstered in the scrums. I was confidently predicting a close 2nd half...

  • Hard News: Go Us,

Nats decided to field Stephen Franks against him and Wellingtonians are unlikely to be moved by his slash-and-burn approach to centralised government.

Ha, given we elected Richard Prebble I hardly think that is a likely reason for Franks' rejection - if indeed it happens.

Wellingtonians are, on the whole, a pretty tolerant bunch, regardless of political alignment. Franks is simply not a reflection of that attitude.

  • Hard News: The Spiral of Events,

Glenn still strikes me as more credible.

Of course you do Craig. That's probably because he gave $500,000 to your favourite party.

  • Hard News: The Spiral of Events,

I still don't get how Clark sits on this until yesterday.

She didn't did she? Just because she didn't go public does not mean she sat on it. Also, the SFO investigation has nothing to do with the Glenn donations as far as I can tell.

Ultimately she is not responsible for the behaviour members of other parties in the coalition if they are doing the job assigned to them capably. I think the recent visit by Rice and the thawing of the NZ/US relationship and the raising of the profile of the Pacific region demonstrates that, to many peoples' surprise, Peters was doing his job well.

Um, I just quoted the end...does that count?

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

Watching Winston squirm on the hook of his own hubris is just gravy. :)

I realise that. But hens coming to roost is hardly the point.

I am sure many would like to know, for example, who has been contributing to party funds over the last 20 years, particularly during the mass sell off of NZ infrastructure. It seems we now have a mechanism and precedent for following up on these issues. That is where this whole circus seems to lead and gets interesting.

  • Legal Beagle: You always wanted a compact,

I'm not a great critic of the electoral college – sure it's an anachronism, but I think it is a legitimate way for a country (particularly a federation) to choose its head of Government – the national compact is just a really clever idea...

Hey, it worked for the USSR so why fix it?
