  • Field Theory: It's called Super for a reason,

I found the NYT's Inside The Playbook animations very useful for understanding what goes on in a down.

And I, for one, look forward to rioting should Haydyn's prediction come true.

  • Field Theory: Hey, no gang signs,

Matthew Sinclair having a word to the Australian hecklers after catching Matthew Hayden will always have a special place in my heart.

  • Field Theory: Pow! Vroom! Ka-Ching!,

It makes me wonder if there's a bunch of people out there in the world desperately missing All Blacks games, and I should return the favour (if I had a HDD drive).

Uh, yes. But what I really miss is test cricket.

  • Hard News: Reasons to be cheerful,

Hay bales? This isn't Ohio Geoff ;-) And while we have the roaring furnace and double-glazing, the apartment is a converted attic, and unfortunately there isn't quite enough between the ceiling and the roof. So it's a bit chilly inside, but nowhere near as bad as any house I've lived in in Auckland. Still, in the unheated bathroom, my shampoo is frozen.

Of course, it's not nearly as bad as Canada. Which is probably something to be cheerful about.

  • Hard News: Reasons to be cheerful,

dc_red: Ouch. Pittsburgh got down to a low of -22 last week, and it was not pleasant, and it makes me glad for the -11 we're currently experiencing. It's amazing how the cold seems to seek out any exposed skin at those temperatures. I feel your pain.

Yesterday, though, it got up to 10 degrees. Pittsburgh winters get into these weird cycles of mostly -6 -- -18 degrees, and then every couple of weeks it will get above freezing for a couple of days. When I left home in the morning it was 2 degrees C, and I remembered what it felt like to be warmed by the sun.

That was definitely a reason to be cheerful.

Oh, and this town is going Superbowl crazy. This morning I saw people lining up outside stores in said freezing temperatures in order to buy Steelers merchandise.

  • Field Theory: Every guy does it,

    It's just awful.

Better? Or worse? I just can't tell.

  • Field Theory: Every guy does it,

The Pittsburgh Steelers Superbowl song. Truly an abomination.

  • Hard News: It's not OK to just make…,

were as the Aussie one focuses on the damage.

I think what I find weird about the Australian ads is that half of their message seems to be 'domestic violence is a crime' rather than 'domestic violence is wrong in and of itself'. It seems to me that telling men not to hit women because it's illegal to do so, and thus framing it in the context of the coercive power of the state, is less effective than making it about both personal responsibility and the responsibility of the community not to turn a blind eye.

  • Obamania, For Real,

I can surprise him and beat him to the punch for once.

    That's not okay, Giovanni.

The actual inauguration is on around midday EST. I've got to be on campus at 9AM, and it will be interesting to see whether the undergrads are more excited about Obama or the fact that the Steelers are headed to the Superbowl. Probably the latter.

  • Up Front: The Missus,

We can do this all day.

Only once a week, I'm afraid.
