Geoff: We just took the I-70 through West Virginia. It's more or less a three hour drive, and not a particularly exciting one, although the fact that we were well behind schedule, towing a U-Haul trailer, and driving through a thunderstorm certainly meant it had its moments on that occasion. Between Columbus and Cincinnati there's the Creation Museum which, to my dismay, I've been past three times and not gotten to stop once. The HELL IS REAL sign nearby is almost as good, though.

Danielle, I agree, the Civic is glorious, and as soon as I posted that I realised I didn't quite mean it. However, the Ohio Theater really is something else. Take the virtual tour, and make sure you look up at the ceiling with the 360 degree viewer.

Simon: The thing that got me about it was that it was so unnecessary. Tickets to those gigs were US$90 and sold out in minutes. And, just between you and me, Tom Waits puts on the sort of show that doesn't need enhancement. Eventually one of the ushers came and had a word. The next night, at the Knoxville concert, people were leaving during songs in order to get beers.

    Go figure.

I saw Tom Waits (!!11!OMFG) in June. Before I sat down, I texted a friend in New Zealand, who isn't even really a fan, but I wanted someone to know, and I don't have many NZ friends' numbers in my cell phone. I then switched the phone off, but not before taking a crappy photo of the empty stage despite the photo ban in the theatre.

During the show, however, there were two guys a few rows in front of us (it was a seated show, in a beautiful 1920s theatre that would put the Civic to shame), who were variously standing up during songs, taking their shirts off, and generally acting like dicks (this was in Ohio, natch). At one point, they lit up a joint, and then one of them walked out of the theatre during the Tom at the piano bit, of all things.

This, I thought, was worse than someone texting.

The West Indies won the second ODI by five wickets with one ball remaining, in a reduced overs match.

But, more to the point, it is possible to get a draw. Both teams can have the same number of runs at the end of 100 overs. It happens from time to time.

Does it says something about the American mind-set, that there must always be a solitary winner?

It's especially strange in baseball because they play so many games in the regular season that the outcome of any individual game is more or less irrelevant. I once watched -- from the comfort of a bar -- a Pittsburgh Pirates home game that went to 13 innings. It was -2 and snowing outside.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

That raises the question of how one actually pronouncesa work like "pwned".

Like 'owned', but with a p on the front. When using it as an exclamation, experts pronounce the 'ed' as 't'.

What does anyone do with a history degree now anyway?

    More history degrees!

Also, everything I know about the speed at which cats fall, I learned from PATs.

  • Hard News: Birth of the Nasty,

I must say though that the word "Satire" in your byline on Scoop is horrible, it really must go. It's like telling a joke and pausing just before the punchline to say "this is going to really make you laugh".

I used to think that, Giovanni, but after the last year or two in New Zealand politics, so much of Lyndon's work seemed entirely plausible, and I decided that the cautionary 'satire' tag was warranted.
