  • Hard News: Some reprehensible bullshit, in reply to Sam Bradford,

the bigger problem is lack of an alternative

plenty of alternatives... we're at one now... for those looking

Big media is what it is, sad and morally bankrupt, and this won't change its only going to get worse cause truth is a virtue big business and those in power cannot abide unless it sits in with their perceived view of the world

thankfully those who care enough to look for truth and intelligent views are well catered to

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Good ideas that…, in reply to Russell Brown,

I can see why the site and remixes could so easily end up being near on impossible for so many potential buyers to get

"What Legitmix actually sells is a file that rebuilds the song on your hard drive to the remixer's instructions."

    http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/21/4541926/legitmix-omid-mcdonald-legal-remix-itunes

Given you need either the original source files (songs) or to purchase the exact same copies then for someone not in the country the remixer lives you would quickly find not all itunes stores contain the same source material and other vagaries of differing territories and markets...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legitmix

How this applies to a remake not remix I dunno, would guess its never going to work given the artist hasn't sampled any source file... easier to "find" the file on your computer than buy it in other words

  • Hard News: Music: Watching on Twitter…, in reply to Simon Sjorn,

The crowd seemed so muted and uninterested. Or.too.cool.to.get excited?.

the crowd was the quietest they've been for years, well since the public element was added... def not a cool thing - there is nothing cool about music awards fullstop

not a fan of the TV show aspect - the media conglomerate presenting their presenters and now cross pollinating all their various radio and TV outlets in a PR stunt called the music awards.. which becomes an ongoing (not funny) comedy gag they've hijacked - the disrespect paid to musicians by the presenters fucks me off, ever so slightly

Saying that there are some very deserving awards and recipients, few whom get mentioned anywhere - now thats cool

  • Hard News: News from home ...,

feel a bit meh about Little... but also felt that about the choices, the campaign for leader and labour full stop since the election

Saying that if his party peers allow, Little could be the one to at the least construct a solid united and loyal team. If so that alone makes the result a good one - doubt the others would have the support or unity to do as much

    Good luck to him!

  • Hard News: The Boom Crash, in reply to Hugh Wilson,

including where on earth folks get the $ from

families I would wager are a big part of enabling those with hefty loans and entry level wages to either borrow, or I know a few whose families are collectively building housing portfolios which means the younger members aren't individually required to mortgage their lives for a roof

Density is a solution of sorts, though prone to very proactive nimbys pushing the concept away from areas that need it most. I fear for the types of buildings developers will throw into the mix - given the shitty apartment buildings that litter the inner city (cheap and designed to maximise initial profit and stuff the long term consequences)

As a huge aside: On the German way

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/eamonnfingleton/2014/02/02/in-worlds-best-run-economy-home-prices-just-keep-falling-because-thats-what-home-prices-are-supposed-to-do/

Wouldn't it be great if once NZ followed successful countries instead of emulate the US, Canada, UK, Aus in our market solutions (to pretty much everything)

  • Hard News: Housing, hope and ideology, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

    just that it’s complex

Sorry not picking open you Lucy but this is a phrase we see trotted out a lot by our elected leaders and each time I see/hear it I cry bullshit

Its not a complex issue if there is a will and desire to solve the problem, as already mentioned, but that just isn't the case

  • Hard News: The uncooling of the inner West,

only way to maintain some character outside of what house and garden and the investor classes copy as this seasons fashion is to retain what little social housing there is in the suburbs and for new developments including multilevel places to include a percentage of low cost/social housing

Diverse neighbourhoods are what made these inner suburbs so fun and "cool" - added bonus those whom have done well retain some connection with the lot of the masses, possibly engendering some empathy for those our economy doesn't favour
