  • Hard News: Dopamine psychosis and other…,

    Last Cullen quote, promise:

So let’s look at their record. They never cut taxes on the lowest income earners. They never cut taxes on savings. They never cut taxes on the business sector. They did cut taxes on the dead in a fit of emotional empathy!

Waiting for Craig to tell Cullen to "STFU", any time now...

Now when you can’t remember how many houses you’ve got, and which one you live in, $20 or $30 a week may seem pretty unimportant. For a lot of Kiwi families it’s crucial.

Heh, that's the Cullen that was MIA last election. I am sure talk of moving him aside is wishful thinking from the opposition.

  • Hard News: Real Media,

Interesting variety of topics, Russell. I am attending and speaking at an education conference (Moodle Moot) at the Open University in the UK. Martin Langhoff has just given a keynote on the One Laptop Per Child project. Whilst that project is worthy the most interesting stuff is some of the research that underpins it.

The "Hole in a wall" research undertaken by Dr. Sugata Mitra at schools and other places in India just showed how well groups of children could learn by themselves given very basic access to information. That is, a public connection the internet.

The other thing that is interesting about this conference is how afraid educators are about giving up "control" of the classroom, virtual or otherwise. But that's not something for me to shout about in present company :-)

Why is it that only Nandor and the Greens seem to be able to protect the interests of the vast majority of the digital community?

The program also described a massive international flow of cash, nick-named the "Brethren Express", in which members ferry money in envelopes across borders for unknown purposes.

Covert foreign interference in national elections is a serious issue. I have huge questions about the funding of EB campaigns and whether it is entirely from their own pockets or whether they also act as a front for other interested parties.

Tin foil hat? Maybe, but they are building up some tack record here of pretty despicable undermining of confidence in our electoral systems.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

It is no coincidence that this happened between the first and second reading of the ammendment to the SoTA.
    Think about it.

Ok, I did. For 2 seconds. From what I have read this bill is going to be passed by about 110 to 10. Given its negative nature and the support of National why the hell would the Government/Cops contrive an event to bring unwanted attention to the bill. That claim is nonsense. Think about it.

What seems more likely is that those opposed to the bill are using this incident to bring more rigorous attention to its content.

I would also note that the suspects were arrested, charged, put in front of a judge and granted/denied bail in a matter of days. This is not the UK or USA where they could have languished for months under interrogation.

That being said, I concur with the likes of Idiot Savant, let's keep it this way.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

I find the political restraint shown by all parties (so far) is welcome. I wonder how this sort of event would play out elsewhere. Election year in Australia, for example.

Seems like a pretty sensitive issue to me.

Not read kiwiblog recently but I also wonder how the resident nut jobs there are feeling. I distinctly remember a post from Mr, Redbaiter calling for folks to take to the hills with guns and to defend their freedoms. Are they in all out support mode for those arrested?

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

I remember seeing Gil Scott Heron at a student gig in Liverpool. It was great and one of the few occasions he managed to get through UK customs without being caught on possession of cocaine.

    Auckland deserves better.

D'ya think? All that snippiness over the stadium and "Auckland deserves" attitude would lead some of us to think otherwise.

As a Wellington ratepayer, business and personal, I would be very willing to fork out more to get the Caketin upgraded and the final played here. Just like I am willing to pay to see a half decent soccer team play week in / out and attend the World of Wearable Arts show.

  • Hard News: Those Men Again,

I think also that the War on Pseudonyms fails to recognise that women sometimes have a different experience of online forums than men.

Yes, I have definitely witnessed and had second hand evidence of that. It's horrible. I wasn't trying to start a war, just make a bout about my own conclusions.
