Music-wise, Deep Purple would have to be the muthalode of most things bogan. After all, that's where the Sabs stole most of their chops from. A few days before the 1984 Queen Street riots the Monsters of the Deep
played an evening show at Western Springs. Irked by the delay in getting out of the carpark afterwards an angry attendee expressed himself in bogan fashion by performing on-the-spot wheelies of frustration.Unfortunately he winged a wheelchair-bound member of his tribe, which raised the righteous ire of the assembled masses. Again in the true bogan manner they hauled him from his vehicle and administered summary bogan justice by depriving him of his pants.

The bogan has evolved – open to new technology – *now, it’s the Nissan skyline.
And/or the WRX or CRX.

See Aussie V8 racing – it was an entire racing code with a caveat that the cars had to be built using 1950’s technology. (I think they now race Japanese and German cars, the Australian motor industry having run out of buyers for their land yachts and closed down).
There have been thoughts out loud of shipping over the Ford Mustang & Chevy Camaro for whatever succeeds the V8 Supercars. Maybe a return to the Group A rules?

Definitely. And regarding Lemmy, how cool is this?

Still on cars and music… notice the resemblance?

Tom Robinson in particular has always sounded just like the Strawbs to me on this number.
Also TRB & Citizen Band dressed the same, while managing to stand with their feet further apart in each succeeding video. Probably something to do with attempting bogan while having been to a 'good school'.

can I cross credit my Iron Maiden, or is that too middle class?
Iron Maiden is a quintessential metal band, existing as they do outside of the constraints of time and space that might in any other group cause at least a miniscule change in fashion or style.
So you get a pass.

Er, except Britain doesn't have bogans, it has chavs. Some of whom are gay, apparently, but then Britain is a very stratified society.

Could you be a bit more specific? I really don't have a clue what it is I've said that you're on about.

V8 Supercars, Bathurst...
Who remembers "Godzilla", banned from racing because it was just too good compared to other "supercars".The racing GT-Rs not only ended the reign of the previously all-conquering Ford Sierra Cosworths in Australian touring car racing, but their incredible success ironically led to their demise. For 1993, the ATCC rules were changed to exclude four-wheel drive turbocharged cars, ushering in today’s two-make V8 Supercar series and closing a spectacular chapter in Australian motor sport history.
But the Nassan could well be coming back after its win at the Bathurst 12 Hour race win.
Not since Jim Richards called the crowd a “pack of arseholes” in 1992 have Nissan drivers stood on the top step of the Bathurst podium, and the GT-R made its move with only minutes remaining in the race.

I grew up in Glen Eden in the 70s and 80s. We were, and still are, westies. Never Bogan. I don't even know where that word came from. Australia maybe. I think westies probably only use it jokingly even now. As far as the car thing, all true westies from my era knew the hierarchy: American V8s over all, with Mopar at the top, then Ford, then Chevrolet (GM). Next comes Aussie cars, in the same order Mopar (Valiant), then Ford, then GM(Holden). Then British. Euro cars somewhat acceptable, but essentially rich men's wives cars. Sorry to rant about cars, but I feel it's an important part of this culture, if you feel it needs to be defined.

Very true, Westies, every country with a west coast has them. I think its a Sunrise/Sunset thing. Whereas Bogon, in my humble opinion, is a Culture/Class thing.

That Trotter's picked it up indicates to me that westies, druffs, hoons, chavs, neds, whatever, are all fodder for gentrification. And I'd go with Alan P's guess that bogan is Australian.

Surely the Bedford van with a semi-clad barbarian woman wreathed in flames spraypainted on the side and padded all-leather interior and massive sound system was not only for the wives?
-
Yes, and a decent Capri also fairly respectable. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that when it comes to cars, Euro means from one of them countries on the continent. The old Alpha Romeo GTV comes to mind.
-
BenWilson, in reply to
Ah, I see you listed British separately. Not real Euros. You can't even spend Euros there, they get all silly about it and want literally pounds of money for everything.

All the more so, after Holden & Ford shut down production in Oz soon. As I've mentioned earlier in the thread, I hope they bring back the Group A glory days.

Eat the Rich. The bit where Lemmy recommends his "bacon torpedo" is particularly good. Eat yer heart out Eminem.

Just to be precise Dave Snell's tv show Bogans begins this Thursday on TV2 at 9pm - a Labour of Love!

So how about a separate bogan electoral roll, with their own electorates, which they fight for by going all medieval on one another instead of voting? Take it away Mr. Trotter.
-
Craig Young, in reply to
Descriptive differences. What we call bogans, they call chavs as they manifest many of the same characteristics.
