  • Katharine Moody, in reply to Russell Brown,

But all the comments being disappeared? That’s strange. The editors should not go along with this bullshit.

Another one to watch to see what the Eds do. Fran O'Sullivan's article from yesterday - comment stream open, but none posted through yet.

Wouldn't it be interesting if they just simply remove the comments field and post none.

Toby is a New Zealander, but he spent some time working in the UK --- I remember him talking about his experiences at the Guardian for a Great Blend event, I think.

Comments on Fran's article appear to be ravingly in support.
I wonder how many they rejected.

I have noticed the guardian has had a lot more NZ coverage since they opened their Aus bureau, so I'm sure that trend will continue. They've hired Toby Manhire (sp?) or have some kind of arrangement with him, though that might have just been for the election. At any rate, I do expect they'll watch NZ events closer, and cover them more.

Now they just need a more visible NZ presence to foot it with the incumbents. It'll take a considerable amount of investment though, and it'll have to be the right sort of investment.

The Graun has deep coffers. They're making a huge commitment to expanding coverage of the globe with as much local content as possible, and to long form and investigative journalism. Now they're having a go at being subsidised by those who want to contribute to the paper's continuance, without resorting to pay walls. It's still early days, but y'know, they are trying, and trying a whole lot of different things.

  • Marc C,

This is a great post by Keith, and I admit that I had to read it twice, to fully understand his assessment of the media in this past last election campaign. Indeed, it is also my view, that the mainstream media has generally failed to do it's job. Some journalists (reporters, TV and radio hosts) did do a reasonable and even good job, but others were not seeming to do so. And I remain convinced that there are also a fair few, and we know them, who are actually very biased, while having positions that are very public and that reach wider audiences, viewer- and readership.

I have not read all the comments here, so I am not sure whether anyone mentioned this. But yesterday I watched the Nation on TV3 (Saturday morning), where Lisa Owen actually encouraged people to deliver feedback - especially on the media's performance in the election campaign. There was an interesting discussion later in that program, where three media persons defended the media, against some allegations or accusations made by John Minto. I partly agreed, partly disagreed with Minto, but he certainly raised some points worth to take seriously.

What really astonished me though was, that during the whole program, there were NO text, Twitter or Facebook messages published down the bottom of the screen, which they usually do. I wondered what was going on. My conclusion is now, that the feedback was probably so critical, that TV3 decided to NOT publish the comments that Lisa Owen had actually asked viewers to make.

With the resignation of David Cunliffe yesterday, as Labour leader, and a rather revamped, changed version of The Nation today, there was more focus on other topics, like the Labour leadership contest, and what Grant Robertson and others had to say about David Cunliffe. I only watched part of the program this morning (Sunday 28 Sept.), but again I saw during that NO text, Twitter or Facebook comments published.

Unless someone has already written something on this already, this may deserve some more research and attention.

Probably they will publish carefully vetted comments, at a later time, when none of the audience has remembered about it to check.

Also, I'm pretty pissed off that all the coverage has been over the Labour leader thing, when will still have very little idea about what we can expect from the elected government over the next 3 years.

  • Marc C,

This is the On Demand video from TV3 and The Nation, covering the talk and discussion between John Minto, Lisa Owen, former TV executive Mark Boyd and Sunday News editor Jonathan Milne:

Clearly, the media do not take kindly to being criticised.

    +1
Usually after a big horse race, the media and public interest follows the big winners, leaving the also-rans to make their own way back to the stables largely untroubled (after all the jockeys get tested of course), unless there is an enquiry into the race the losers are forgotten about till next race (well aside from those who had money on them)...

National, with all their dodgy form, has seemingly just disappeared from The Bird Cage leaving the Press to harry the losers. They should get their gumboots on and track National down at their champagne victory parties and let them know they are on notice to perform much, much better...

    Nothing’s changed, apparently.

This morning I switched on TVNZ only to see the PM’s extended commentry on what the Labour Party should be doing about its leadership, repeated from an earlier interview as their priority news item, and Fairfax is happy to repeat. A few minutes ago I heard Kathryn Ryan advising they’d later have Hooten on to speak about the Labour Party’s leadership.

I didn’t hear Espiner’s thing, but from elsewhere at least Norman seems to have the sense to point out that the Labour Party’s business really isn’t his own and it’d be silly for him to comment.

Asking these politicians about their own policies and parties is apparently too hard, or maybe someone’s afraid that JK wouldn’t show up if he thought he was going to be challenged.

More than "afraid", they *know* he won't front to an interview if he thinks he's actually going to have to pull his finger out of his arse about National's policies and priorities over the next term.
