  • Ben Austin,

and if you get bored of such email scams there is always 419eaters.com to satisfy your lusts.

I'll never tire of hearing about "nigerian" scammers being scammed.

  • Juha Saarinen,

Unfortunately, while the Australians (ACCC) are able to act as per what I wrote on my blog entry, the NZ ComCom can't see a breach of the Fair Trading Act.

In my view, not acting on these things will work as an invitation for the scammers, who are currently being driven out their UK and Aussie "markets".

  • Ben Austin,

I had thought misleading information (or at least hiding) about the true price/intent of a service had previously been deemed a breach.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

There's a related service that I keep seeing advertised around the 'tubes. It claims it will tell u who ur 1 true love is, or similar.

Here's my prediction for anyone who signs up: You'll meet your one true love at a court-ordered budgeting advice workshop.

Also, I recently found three voicemails waiting on my phone at home. They were of the "make money at home!!!!" variety, but the funny thing was the prerecorded Telecom voice saying "Message received from..." and then a far to cheerful lady exclaiming "FINANCIAL FREEEEEEEDOM!!!!!!"

  • Rich of Observationz,

Personally I don't see a reason why this sort of service should be allowed at all.

Careful Rich, you might start questioning some aspects of capitalism and the Black Helicopters Will Come For You!
Soon we will be thinking wistfully of the "Nigerian" scammers, I got an email from Burkino Faso that offered me the chance to be rich due to someones traffic accident.

  • Rob Stowell,

I've consulted my astrologer and he sez venus is in mars back-yard for a barbie of monkeybrains, jupiter popped over the road for some fags, RB is in vietnam, the moon is demi-ascendent in the watery personalities making accidents and rambling conversations with lunatics likely, the tide is slack on the firth of plausibility and- nuh, the stars are all agin it.

  • Finn Goode,

The libertarian in me tends towards the view that people are as entitled to waste their time and money on such services.

However we could benefit from far stricter controls on the promotion of such 'premium' text content so at least the vulnerable mentally deficient members of our society are more aware of what they getting themselves into.

Perhaps a 'sin' tax as per gambling/ tobacco etc. on such services.

And how about some economic nationalism? don't you hark back to the good old days when it was kiwi's ripping each other off? (many providers off-shore and less accountable)

  • Julian Melville,

Anyone checked the T&C link on destinyrevealed.co.nz? (You get the link once you get through to the phone number screen).

"Currently, the Service is only available to residents of the USA. You understand and acknowledge that you may not sign up for, access, or attempt to access or use the Service from countries outside of USA."

Would that be a useful out if you got snapped by this scam?

Ooh that's unkind, WH :) My ears have run away.

  • WH,

At least yours got away. Not all ears are so lucky.

    Albert: “What happened here?”

Pacheco: “He got bit, I think.”

Albert: “Evander Holyfield—LOOK OUT!!—is pushed right here, above us, by Tyson!”

Pacheco: “He got bit in the ear.”

Albert: “Oh, my goodness! He's got a bloody right ear! Holyfield bitten by a dirty Mike Tyson!”

Czyz's response during the replay, after Tyson was disqualified for biting Holyfield the second time:

“If I were Evander, I would have kicked him.”
