• Danyl Mclauchlan,

Do you know if Telstra Clear will ever offer some kind of PVR deal? I can't see anything on their site.

I'm asking you 'cos you know about these things.

• Lyndon Hood,

Can I take it by the title there is supposed to be TiVo-related content in the post?

Apart from Susan Boyle, obviously.

I voted for the Ruru (morepork) as we were out a French Bay in the evening last month, & they were out in force. Wonderful to be sitting listening to the lap of the wavelets & the Ruru's calling.

Aarrrggh. Fixed now.

You know how you have to be careful around open CMS windows and watch that you don't accidentally delete stuff when you're pasting in additional content?

I have limitless editing time, much in the manner of a god.

That now reads:

Which is a shame. I've been trying out the Panasonic BluRay recorder/DVR, which does have a viable YouTube application (in VieraCast) – but is let down somewhat by the content delivery. The VieraCast server is in California, and I'm not -- which means that videos sometimes load very slowly, depending on network conditions. We tend to take for granted the remarkable content delivery network that makes YouTube on our computers such a compelling experience.

Aargh editing dilemma.... I could make this post look like I hadn't failed to read Giovanni's, which would make me look better to later readers, but would spoil the narrative... also I'd have to think of something intelligent to say instead...

Trippy. Maybe I could set up a script to load random (and even contradictory) versions of the post every 10 minutes, so that depending on when they arrive, readers may be debating entirely different points.

• Stuff n Things,

I'm very keen to see where IPTV goes in the next wee while - the idea of programmes on demand has so much potential! TVNZ and TV3 have ondemand websites - now it's just a matter of getting that content on my TV with a user-friendly interface...

I recently had a go at attaching a small, low power computer (an Asus EEBox, about $500) to the back of our LCD TV to view YouTube and related streaming sites. It's been pretty awesome, but non-YouTube sites struggle to provide a consistent stream. I get a good TV-friendly interface with some software called Boxee, and have been very pleased that this has given me ondemand-style access to old Media 7 and Top Gear episodes (yus!).

Am interested to see how the NZ streaming website ziln.co.nz works out. It seems to have potential, but at the moment it's a bit too slow to be useful. Of course this is probably the fault of our internet connection, but I'm in the middle of one of NZ's larger cities with a 'fast as your line can go' broadband plan, so I'm not sure there's much more I can do about the line in...

The Myfreeview and Tivo boxes are interesting, but I think a lot of potential customers have been a bit disappointed to see that the cost of buying in to the technology is closer to $1000 than, say $400.

Think of it as an interactive indictment of the ephemerality of topicality in digressionary digital discourse.

Same problem. Mine was faster on ADSL1 out in the 'burbs. (Must of been right near a cabinet.) Now I'm have half that speed on ADSL2 in the CBD connected to Christchurch central exchange.

That and those stupid new wheelie bins, makes me think they don't like people living in the inner city.

• Gareth Ward,

Ms Minicola said she hoped other telcos would follow Telecom's lead and offer no-limits broadband deals that allowed movie downloads.

And then merrily send them over to a Telecom store or website to buy it? Methinks... unlikely.

• Gareth Ward,

Also, is interesting just how much control Hybrid have handed over to Telecom - that may explain the confusion around "locked into Telecom" as that's certainly a (false) message that benefits TCNZ but seems to hurt potential uptake for Hybrid.

the cost of buying in to the technology is closer to $1000 than, say $400.

Agreed, but Telecom would be fools to run with the one-off cost as the leader. $200 plus $30 a month for a couple of years can stack up nicely against the $100 and $65 a month ad infinitum of Sky+.
They may even get some normal-digital Sky subscribers shifting over to get PVR functionality at a lower monthly price (for those who just watch mainly free-to-air anyhoo)

• Samuel Scott,

I am so excited by Lawrence Arabia winning that award. James is a fantastic songwriter and it is well deserved. It is also interesting to note that the song was recorded in a variety of make shift DIY situations (a laptop in dalston, a cold hall in Wellington, finished in a proper studio in Auckland) and self released in New Zealand.

James has worked really hard, self managing, self releasing, self producing his work and this a great vindication of his spirit.

hmmm, I'm gushing a bit.

Yeah, it sounded like an exclusive deal with Telecom to me.
Perhaps they don't expect to have deals with the other ISPs by November or they are playing hard ball with them.

An interesting revelation in that Throng TV interview with (TV3 news chief) Mark Jennings.

The problems with the TV3 newsroom are because NZers are "a bunch of poofters" and, of course,... yawn... "political correctness".

What a deep and profoundly reflective thinker Mr Jennings is...

Two words: Commerce Act.

I hope Telecom's got some fairly good competition advice on this, cos it looks to me like there's at least a question here as to whether they're entering into a competition-squishing, market power abusing agreement.

I spoke to an annoying wee Telstra salesman who said that he expected a PVR to hit Telstra's market around November. Though given I've seen nothing about this since (this was August), I'm thinking this was just bluster.

I've found him to be quite thoughtful in the past, but he presents terribly in that interview -- like a man under a lot of pressure.

It's a shame he can't acknowledge the shortcomings in the dioxin documentary, but I wouldn't expect TVNZ news to be any different in that respect.

Am I to take it that you are so enraptured of this Tivo device that you are now in favour of two-tier internet? (Uncapped data transfer for "premium" Tivo users at the expense of everyone else.) OH NOES sa Telecom, we never saw that coming.

It's certainly an implication, but that's been the case for Telecom's IPTV plans for years. And, of course, Orcon offers zero-rated data for its customers using TVNZ ondemand and a number of other local sites already. Everybody thinks that's a great thing.

You can't welcome zero-rating for local traffic but then complain when Telecom does it. And, as I noted, while the TiVo on-demand programming is delivered via IP, it isn't internet content.
