  • Kumara Republic,

There's another one: Taxpayers' Onion. Though it might have been a Freudian slip on Russell's part.

  • Kyle Matthews,

The day we stop using ‘beltway’ to refer to NZ politics cannot come too soon.

One day I'm going to find time to compile a list of overseas words that we use that make no sense in a NZ context and no one bitches about using them at all.

Starting with everything-gate. It makes no sense to just grab the gate part and tag it onto anything, but we do.

  • Kumara Republic,

Seems I might have sparked a Twitter trend with my Paddy Gower pun upthread. Always a heartening sign when Twitter backdraft can be converted to merciless satire.

    all gas and '-gaters'...

It makes no sense to just grab the gate part and tag it onto anything,

    I know!
by that logic Nixon shoulda been caught out in a Watergate-gate scandal!
    or 'plumber-gate' at least...

seems '-gaters' gonna gate, no matter what....
    lazy trope shorthand be damned!

    multi-level marketing?

    Taxpayers’ Onion

it's enough to make ya weep
or is it just a case of
    Alliaceae through the looking glass?

That -gate one is so bad it's even used in Chinese, where whatever latest scandal or "scandal" is a something-or-other -门/-mén.

  • Kim_Wright,

I know Dirty Politics probably has it in the bag but has anyone nominated this one yet?

    "contested"

I imagine the new OECD report will be described as such in light of Bill English's i/v on RNZ this morning.

If we'd all been to 'good schools' we wouldn't need to be told that.

Can someone explain why pffft was listed as a contender. Its been posted a few times so i’m guessing it refers to something or some incident.

It's what John Key says when under pressure in the House.

Not too concerned - as in what our PM seems to often be despite what goes on around him!

  • Rich of Observationz,

A word we haven’t had but I would like is a term for text bugs introduced by a programmer into source code through not realizing the editor has focus, e.g:

    data.each do |datum|
datum.update_special 12, hey do you want to go for a beer eh?
    end

    Fingerpoos?
