Duh! I clean forgot to mention Imbibe, where the pineapples were indeed quite lovely. It was all brilliantly organised, even if I did feel really quite shabby the next day.

Did the Herald kindly inform the Zoo that Burton was working there or was the Zoo already going to terminate his employment and they were just reporting on it? It makes a difference in terms of judging the article.

If you cannot tell by reading the article, then it is either very poor reporting, or it is the former.

Strange, each time I go there, I see animal keepers I recognise from the "The Zoo" TV program.
Surely, if I recognise them from TV, thats "high profile" ? :)

Is it correct to refer to Mark Burton's killing of his mother as murder? I thought he was acquitted of that charge.

The real risk Burton posed to the zoo was a PR risk. And they reacted in classic PR weasel fashion.

Ouch Stephen, as a sometime 'weasel' that smarts, I reckon the advice to zoo management could just as easily (and possibly more likely) have emanated from another noble profession, the legal fraternity :-)

I'd actually be really interested in your informed view as a PR person: what if the zoo had said "Yes, we're extending the same care and decency to Burton as we do to other animals. He's supervised and a minimal risk to the public." Mightn't that do as much good to perceptions of the zoo as bad? And in a couple of weeks, what would it matter anyway?

Hmm, it's hard to say without knowing more about how the arrangement between the Mason clinic, the rehab programme, and the various employers (in this case, the Zoo) works, but in principle, if you are an employer who has taken a decision to support such a programme, then I agree this was an opportunity to support and promote it in both word and deed. In other words, to back your own judgement and explain your rationale.
I personally would think better of the zoo if they took the approach you suggest above. However, I am sure that if they did, some of our more sensational media outlets would have made the ongoing presence of Mr Burton at the zoo a matter of further public attention. I can see the breathless 20/20 expose now .......

naturally it would have also been different if the zoo wasn't a place frequented by families. if burton was shovelling shit on a farm they would likely have left him to his shovel.
but the hysteria factor was what made this story particularly disdainful. once again the sunday papers illustrate how disgraceful they really are.
as burton's father himself on nat radio this morning, "it's a pity this had to happen, mark was making good progress in his rehabilitation" (or something to that effect).
mind you, i'd be eating my words if that fateful cry was ever issued, "LOOK OUT!! IT'S BURTON!! AND HE'S ARMED WITH A MEERCAT!"
