I'm not convinced it's still RickRolling if you tell people it is. ;-)
I could do the hand movements almost perfectly.
I think I've said too much.
Different Rick, but I still want to dance to this one (just like in the video!):

3410,
Oh, good. Dodgy lyrics.
The flip-side of Terry Jacks' 1974 monster hit Seasons In The Sun takes some beating.
-
+1 to all the Jarre-loving!! I still listen to Oxygene.
And Tangerine Dream…wow, that takes me back.
I’d put Bowie’s Heroes (particularly side 2) in the same basically-ambient New Wave category.Edit: gotta love the über-pretentious video!

When punk hit, I was listening to Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream
Some time in the early 80s I came home with a Jean Michel Jarre album. Appalled, my older brother immediately went and told my mother I was on drugs.
I... am going to leave that other topic alone. I think we all know where I stand on that issue.

Tangerine Dream
I blame the Risky Business soundtrack for igniting my interest. Others for some reason remember Tom Cruise in his undies.
-
Another early 80s classic, just for Jackie.
-
And don’t we need some Billy?
-
Ok, last one for this... oh it's 12.02pm already.
Apparently, it's all about...
-
Tom Cruise in his undies never did it for me.
But this ….
cf. James Marsters.
[it recently occurred to me that an ex of mine looks A LOT like the young R D Anderson! I note the correlation without drawing any conclusions….]

Hey Lilith, d'you ever watch a Billy Idol video and feel vaguely surprised he doesn't look more like James Marsters?

In a word, yes. :-)

Nothing wrong with Tangerine Dream. But you need to go about a decade earlier than that soundtrack (their stuff got steadily worse from about the late 70s). Zeit is the classic:

While we're getting kosmiche.
Sometimes I suspect that Neu! one is the best song ever written ...

This song was the early 80’s for me –
And this one was the mid 80’s:
And this one encapsulates the late 80’s:
As I remember, Flock of Seagulls wasn't really my cup of tea in the early 80's. I was still all about Rod Stewart, and Billy Joel, and Elton John. Not to mention Fleetwood Mac. I found this list........
http://www.musicoutfitters.com/topsongs/1980.htmand I definitely remember most of those songs. It certainly jogged my memories. I seem to remember this one was popular.
But we're talking over 30 years ago. I do appreciate the gesture though, my friend. -

Hebe,
So 80s - The Communards

These conjure up spiritual connection for me
Ahh yes, poor old George the diffident one who is responsible for possibly the lamest lyrics ever:
I look at the floor, and I see it needs sweeping.
Still my guitar gently weeps. As well as the worst chord change ever which you can hear around 30 seconds into this acoustic rendition of Harrison's "I want to tell you" from the Beatles' Revolver album:
-
Hebe,
Noughties punk for the middle-aged: that heartfelt "not enough not enough not enough" Manic St Preachers

Me too. While all the other stuff was there, we were into a lot of New Zealand music (Newmatics, Chills etc) , The Cure, and British Ska in the early eighties. Along with these guys of course.
Precious is one of my all time favourites.

Same-ish. Do you remember these ones from Wellington? I'm unsure about it now; then it was great

I'm sorry but there's no longer enough naff rawk in here. So I'm going to post this:
"I told him 'I am the flower you are the seed'
We walked in the garden we planted a tree"Yes indeed.
The video just sends the naffness over into infinity.

Not that I actually read that into it when it came out: I was far too young and innocent. Another song that I loved back then, without realising just how astonishingly dodgy the lyrics were, was this:
Jesus, were you not listening??? The whole fucking album (yes, I did buy it, on vinyl and CD) is about sex, the more illicit the better.

Apparently Tarantino wanted to use My Sharona for the gimp scene in Pulp Fiction. Here's how it might have gone:
Another take on Jerusalem:
-
No red lights in Northland (of any kind) so used to sing this (well, the chorus) loudly when young when the local radio played it - often on Friday nights - having no idea what it was about:
Roxanne - Police
It was a few years after when I found out the "Ready To Roll" theme music was a song in its own right:
Machine Gun - Commodores
What did we ever do before youtube?
