"Home Brew’s inability to meet funding critera suggest that, frankly, the criteria were wrong" - um, didn't Homebrew get funding under the old NZOA system back in March and June this year, prior to Making Tracks launch?

Duh. I completely forgot that. Have amended.

Cheers. No denying they got that funding after making their own videos tho... bands who rely on official funding to motivate themselves are losers.... DIY FTW

3410,
Volume is online as well
Are you sure? Nzherald.co.nz's Entertainment page looks the same as ever and doesn't seem to mention "Volume" anywhere, nor any of the print Volume's cover stories. Confused.

I know. It looks like the content is online, just not clearly marked as to origin. A bit odd.
-
odd its not distributed in the paper alongside all the other entertainment, housing, sport, housing, housing, and housing supplements

I think "not yet" might be the answer. Found last week's edition, but not the current one.

Supplemental as anything...
...alongside all the other entertainment, housing, sport, housing, housing, and housing supplements
I saw the Weekend Herald print and insert extravaganza for the first time this past weekend - talk about over-kill and over-supply, not impressed with it particularly, the type and layout in the Canvas and other weekend magazine thing was clunky and dated I thought and the rest of the inserts were of absolutely no interest...

Did you look under the rugby supplement? No, not that one, the other one. No, the other other one.

Good going! Also, www.volumemagazine.co.nz redirects to a Facebook page.

And in other news the 'Talking Heads' feature in the second issue of Volume, out today, is myself and Tom Scott in conversation.

Here's the audio of my chat with Tom.

That first issue of Volume is really depressing reading - MORE bands that aren't coming to Christchurch, but are only doing Wellington and Auckland.

Let alone coming to Dunedin. I don't expect the big names to come here, but it'd be nice if some of the smaller / cult o/seas acts did.
Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna, etc) has a whole six days between Wellington and Auckland gigs, but there's no South Island show ? Very, very poor organisation. He'd easily get as many people in Dunedin as he would in either Auckland or Wellington. -
BBC Radio 1 presenter Jen Long – in New Zealand for the Going Global Music Summit – tells us that radio still matters as the “gatekeeper” in an era where there is more music to be had than ever.
And therein lies the fail. There are no more "gatekeepers" in the old sense of being an exclusive source. What radio needs to be is a curator, a recommender, a trusted reviewer. And even then it may be too late.

I don't think all those words are incompatible. Jen goes and and finds good music in the same places that other fans do, but she also gets sent stuff -- a lot of stuff -- directly.
There's also an upload page on the Radio 1 website that automatically allocates tracks to the different regional presenters based on the postcode given by the uploader. Nifty.
