  • Danyl Mclauchlan,

Watkins has written a separate story about the same issue and published it in her paper this morning. I guess continuing her pointless feud with one of the PMs staffers is way more important than actually reporting on the earthquake.

  • Russell Brown,

Anyway, Mr. Lyth, I stand by my view that the phantom gaffe only served to make Jim Anderton look endearingly human. Who the hell hasn't said things that, with the benefit of hindsight, make you cringe?

I do think it created a narrative that wasn't at all helpful to Anderton, not least because of the raging hubris implicit in his -- supposedly -- calling the election result for himself. (Which of course he's far too experienced to dream of doing.)

Pride goeth before an earthquake, you know.

The only person whose good name has been materially harmed is... Slater himself.

I think DPF, who seems obsessed by Anderton at the moment, doesn't come out very well either. He'd have gone nuts had the shoe been on the other foot.

  • Russell Brown,

l'm hattipping @BR3NDA for alerting me to the most bizarre thing to come from the quake so far.

    Oh George, don't be silly.

You know that HAARP caused the earthquake.

  • Craig Ranapia,

You know that HAARP caused the earthquake.

Was most disappointed to find that HAARP isn't the noise you make after a particularly vicious night on the turps. (Google breaks my heart, again.) The thought of piss-heads bringing down a city through the morphic resonance of simultaneous power-chundering... that's a proper conspiracy theory.

  • ChrisW,

Provided Whaleoil is read literally and not personified, I think an image of Craig and Whaleoil moving in elevated and more elevated blue circles has the potential for a great artwork. Could go on a tee-shirt.

Joe Wylie again? No need to set it to music though.

And not a mine in sight!!!!
He REALLY sounded keen on on the job on RNZ this morning.

uncharitably, one might say he was mining a disaster...

HAHA Its some crap bands fault! So some believe.

Feelers - Antennae - Aha! it's the HAARP solo in Right Here, Right Now ...

    The Bog Watch
Canterbury Earthquake is now mentioning how to make a bog.

for peat's sake - Christchurch was originally a bog - that's the problem.

Better get on with the day, luckily the rain wasn't too heavy overnight though that 5.4 rolling jolt at 3.24am wasn't much fun...

    be careful out there folks...

One is not a well person, and is vile in his unwellness, and the other is delightful. This linking of Craig with such a person is upsetting to me. Even in jest.

Screw off - T-shirts are for hair metal bands and Hello Kitty. One would look uncommonly fine in one of Ford Madox Brown's heavy-handed yet strangely moving allegorical canvases, or perhaps something from one of the less florid Pre-Raphaelites? Saint George and The Cetacean? I like, I like...

I am inspired, ChrisW! Must corner Karl Maugham on Friday night. He will become Alexander McQueen to my Lady Gaga! I will be Leigh Bowery to his Lucien Freud! Or else.

    Joe Wylie again?

While I know that's intended as some kind of compliment, I must point out that I've long since been obsoleted by this sort of cheap gadget.

Meanwhile there's an army truck outside, and Avonside Drive is swarming with shovel-wielding soldiers.

Actually, it does look a bit Ford Madox Brown, right down to the idle bystanders (me?). Spooky.

I don't know whether or not to thank Danyl for drawing attention to this hairball of WTF-ness from Com-Post political editor Tracy Watkins.

LOL! The most interesting thing about that story are all the comments telling her to STFU and let the authorities focus on actually helping. Strangely sane comments.

  • ChrisW,

Glad to see you're coping well Craig. I had something more like this Ian Scott
in mind, perhaps with hula hoops. But agreed we change the subject -

Kelvin Berryman on Nine-to-Noon - excellent job on communicating the seismic-geological context, and the degree of uncertainty there must be in how the pattern of aftershocks plays out.

Hey Joe, how flows the Avon by your place? Apart from discolouration, does the relative level and flow look something like normal again or significantly different from before?

  • Joe Wylie,

Clearing up surprisingly quickly thanks ChrisW, considering the amount of rock flour that's been thrown up. It's subject to a tidal rise and fall of about a metre at this spot, and that seems to be happening as usual. With no mains water it's handy having the river so close, you can fetch a bucketful to flush your toilet.

  • Rachel Prosser,

Agreed, all round - though some mentioned our friend Paul Henry striking a bum note.

That man gets worse. He was standing in front of the jewellers yesterday and speculating about looting diamonds from the rubble, and today he was talking about how handy a gun would be so you wouldn't need your own emergency pack because you could take your neighbours.

    Selfish, vain, and silly.

Pippa was covering up by saying it's a joke, but if his mind turns that way it indicates and underlying selfishness and self-centreness.

Did I hear Bob Parker say on morning report this morning that it was alright to flush your toilet now, even though with broken sewers a lot of the product was likely to end up in the rivers?

  • Joe Wylie,

I've so far successfully ignored Bob 'This is Not My Life' Parker. The two times that civil defence have been by they've given the OK to use the bucket flush method, albeit sparingly. I doubt that they checked first with Bob, he only ever reads from someone else's script, after all.

I hear that the weather bloke also insulted some poor kid - who had said he hadn't had a shower since Friday
and the weather guy makes a joke about the smell - real class stuff...

I've so far successfully ignored Bob 'This is Not My Life' Parker.

some people here are getting worried about Bob's orchestration of this opportunity that has landed in his lap:
    - Why is the mayor grandstanding with National party politicians? Why are our local constituency MPs being excluded from the Mayor's photo opps?

    - Why are councillors being excluded from decision-making and providing assistance? (Councillor Yani Johansen was told by the Mayor to phone 941 8999 if he has any issues - unbelieveable...)

    - Why is our Mayor getting kudos. He is just the frontman for the real work being done by our valiant city employees.

    - Why is the state of emergency extended? The concentration of power in the Mayor is unnecessary. Is this a George Bush-type exaggeration of crisis for political gain?

Bob is playing the hero martyr card a little to often - he needs to share the load...

Bob 'This is not my life' Parker is a friend of 'I know John Key, vote for me'. How long before they "have a dream" and copy the Auckland supercity model to rebuild the infrastructure?
