Some space for hotel rebuilds nearby I understand. I guess the land might be slightly more stable or something - unless the reasons are mainly pork-oriented.

3410 you are a moron and a coward hiding behind a synonym.

Gudrun, I know you've apologised somewhat, but this was really unacceptable. Please don't do this sort of thing again.

We know from past experiences how even minor losses in translation can rub people up the wrong way. I've even done it myself.

If the council adopted that plan, not one of them or National MPs in the city would return to power – it’s an electoral line in the sand in Christchurch.

Maybe they should start reprinting those Peoples Republic of Christchurch T-shirts again. I was lucky enough to buy one of the originals.

Banks sounds like a three-legged sloth, on Diazepam, who having fallen out of his tree and landed on his head, has lost the balance of his tiny little mind.

Mmm; I smell bacon. The police station is right across the road from the Avon riverbank, I don't know its land status..

So far from the truth these days though. And unless the left of far right gets organised soon the People's Republic days will be very distant. I tend to think that the protests are Hugh Pavletich and the Lynches (David Lynch is a brother) way of diverting the left and the vulnerable.

Vacant lots all around there too I understand. No idea who owns them either.

Ngai Tahu owned the old King Edward barracks site which is a big parcel on the other side of that block not too long ago. Don't know about now. A lot of big buildings around there are still fenced off, more are coming down every day. So it's ripe for a plan -- I would like to see locals get to use it; it is a prime corner of the city: near the gardens, the Arts Centre, the hospital, Hagley Park and what's left of "town". A convention centre and hotels would gobble it up and people like me wouldn't go there much. I learned to ride a bike on the riverbank along there when I was 17. I bought a white 10-speed at Penny Farthing in Manchester St by the river, couldn't cycle when I hopped on it on the riverbank, and by the time I reached Hagley park I was flying :-)

Back to Banks: he's too important a fish to let off the hook.

Back to Banks: he's too important a fish to let off the hook.

    Indeed he is.

Firstly there is just the sheer newsworthiness of the story. If playing six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon is too difficult for you then linking John Banks to just about every scandal facing the government is child's play - Kim Dotcom, SkyCity casino, the teapot tapes and even Michelle Boag (who helped with Bank's Mayoral campaign).

Love the ACT supporters in the background, you can almost hear them crying out "Braaaiins, if only we had Braaaiins"

Today we got a letter from the ever Groovy John Banks MP for Epsom - he has addressed it to us both and given us one household questionaire - some one should fill him in "Women Have the Vote" and often have different views from that of their partners and they can drive cars - as scary as all that may sound to some - it is a reality.

  • Kyle Matthews,

John Banks can be got rid of the same way Rodney Hide was removed – by an internal coup within Act forcing his resignation. Then an by-election will be held with National standing on the sidelines again meaning the Act candidate wins.

That's not the case. Hide was removed by a caucus vote removing him as leader of the caucus. The party then followed up by adjusting his status to 'not needed' when it came time to select candidates.

Given that Banks is only MP in his caucus he's probably a bit safer, hopefully the electorate will take care of him in 2014 if this scandal doesn't.

  • Steve Barnes,

Whilst we are on a subject (I know, a totally different one but...)
    From today's Herald
Govt will not force any local councils to merge - PM

The proposed law changes reduced the barriers to council mergers.

If an amalgamation of councils was proposed, a majority of the total affected residents would have to vote in support of the merger for it go ahead.

At present, a majority must be found in every separate district affected by an amalgamation.

To force a vote of opposition against a merger, 10 percent of affected residents would have to form a petition.

Does this mean the amalgamation of Auckland Councils was illegal?.
