The obvious choice was Palin, the governor of Alaska, whose guard stands as our last best defense against possible attack by the resurgent Russian menace across the Bering Strait.
chortle.
This VP nomination has been brought to you by the letter A and by the word "abut".

Is it just me or are there others who think that, just maybe, our General Election might be a little more important than the circus that passes for democracy in the US ?
illic es nullus sic caecus ut illud ut mos non animadverto.I think that both are worth watching closely.
The outcome of the US elections have a large impact across the globe and should not be ignored. -
I think that both are worth watching closely.
Well I'm watching both from a distance and for the moment at least, Obama's the best character in the show (though Winston's like an aging JR/Larry Hagman!)

Sorry, I probably should have considered that sentence a bit more carefully. I'm getting genuinely quite worked up about this.
I'm pissed off too, but that word picture isn't going any where soon. :)
(We can talk about both, you know. It's not a zero-sum game.)
ITA, Danielle. And since when has anyone around here been put off talking about whatever the hell they want -- no matter how tangential to the original post, and certainly no matter how much everyone wishes they'd stop. Public Address System -- surrealism you can use! :)

Ewwww....
Sorry...Don't apologise. Anyone who can make Craig say 'Ewww' for a change ...

When she calls one, we'll discuss it ...

chortle.Don't laugh Che. If you look at a map you'll clearly see a line of stepping stones leading from Russia to Alaska.

The outcome of the US elections have a large impact across the globe and should not be ignored.True but ours is one we can do somthing about and a lot of what is going on seems to go under the radar, dismissed as of no importance. The strike story I linked to earlier no longer appears on the Heralds online front page (the link still returns the story) and I, for one, am wondering why, any ideas?

When you see a New York Times editorial headed Let’s Hear It for New Zealand, you just have to find out what that's about. Has the Times joined the Conchords fan club?
Just to be totally off topic here I was in New York last week and was greeted at immigration with "that's one of the great countries there" on sight of the New Zealand passport, followed on later in the week by a office full of New Yorkers quoting FoTC episodes to me. All a bit surreal really ...

Hey I said both were worth watching closely.
There is definate electioneering going on but the race hasn't really started to heat up yet... its more a case of warning shots and cleaning the cupboards at the moment.
I am leaving our shores so will be watching closely from the UK but if anyone wants to go and deliver fridge magnets and knock on doors in my place please stand up.
I will be extolling the virtues of a absentee vote to the ex pats. -
And to be even more off-topic, what are the odds that the Conchords factor inspired the makers of Top Chef to cast that NY-resident scruffy-looking young Kiwi bloke this season?
(His first dish included a Marmite reduction. It was a big hit.)

The hours of leaking of amniotic fluid seems to have been plucked out of the diarist's ass to me.
Ewwww....
an image so appalling it offended Craig.
And this is what scares me about the prospect of Key and Mapp taking over the foreign policy reigns.
Reins, George, not reigns.

Nothing sinister, I suspect. Looks like there's been quite a bit of NZPA wire material added to the site eariler today. But is it just me, or is the Herald's on-line front page more cluttered and busy than it used to be?
-

By then the fix will be well and truly in. Am I the only one that can see the underhand campaign that National/Crosby Textor is already running?
As I have said before "In politics truth is subjective but perception is set in concrete" By the time Helen announces the election date the general public will be of their opinion that the sky is falling and it's all Labours fault. -

What season was that - we're about to start Chicago, series 4, here?

The Sky Is Falling
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!

And, as unjust as this is (and it is) Helen can call the election anytime she wants. Not that I'm necessarily a fan of fixed terms, I live in NSW afterall.

What's your source? I see no such info in the article linked to by the Kos diarist, in which Palin claims to have felt contractions before the speech and to have been told by her doctor over the phone to put her feet up.
The hours of leaking of amniotic fluid seems to have been plucked out of the diarist's ass to me.No, actually. That's what she told the Anchorage Daily News. Her waters broke and she had contractions before she gave her speech, and then she flew back to Alaska later in the day.
Her doctor told the paper it was fine, an obstetrician contacted by the reporter seems to have been a bit shocked by it. This was, after all, a premature special-needs baby.
Maybe she is, as Jolisa observed in another thread, just a total hardass. She was apparently back at her desk three days after the birth and took no maternity leave.

That's it! We've had two episodes so far. Keep an eye out for the Conchordian Kiwi.
(Tangentially: they seem to be trying to make Colicchio less judgemental and douchey. I feel manipulated.)

Seriously - I at least skim through a lot of newspaper sites, and I'm shocked at how many take forever to load for a thoroughly user-unfriendly migraine-inducing experience. The New York Times (to its credit) re-designed its site a few years back, and obviously put a bit of thought into it.
By then the fix will be well and truly in. Am I the only one that can see the underhand campaign that National/Crosby Textor is already running?
Yes? Seriously, if National was a coven of such Satanic cunning why are we having an election at all?

Grand, I need all the justifications I can find to explain why I watch reality TV shows...

That's a relief (of sorts), the existence of a source I mean. Still, the doctor didn't seem to think it was unreasonable of her to fly home.
With our first we went twenty hours from waters breaking to compulsory induction since the labour wasn't progressing. This is back in 2001, and they've relaxed the standards since. I don't think we would have boarded a flight, but if she felt comfortable doing it, I have no problem with it.
-
It was apparently a little more urgent than that. It does seem a tad reckless to board an eight-hour flight when your waters have broken and you're actually in labour.
Good grief, Russell. Let it be. If this story is true, I owe you a drink - within certain conservative limits of course :)
-

Never apologise, never explain. :)

This works for you? Actually, I trade tragic addictions; my wife's big on Project Runway.

BTW, if Palin doesn't work out I've got another woman McCain's peeps should take a look at: Laura Roslin:
OK, on the negative side she's unmarried and has admitted to being a long-term user of a psychoactive drug called chamalla root extract. There's also the persistent rumours that, while Secretary of Education, she had an extra-marital affair with the late President Richard Adar. Also the judgement issue of appointing as her personal aide a woman who turned out to be a Cylon,
But, that's far outweighed by the positives:
1) The evangelicals just love her.
2) She's sound on abortion -- you can't get sounder than banning it.
3) She's very military friendly (especially Admiral Adama).
4) Is hawkish on the Cylon menace -- had a couple thrown out various airlocks.
5) Doesn't get too wet and liberal about rendition and summary executions of Cylon collaborators, suicide bombings, torture and using biological weapons.
6) Has a mixed record on dealing to union agitators -- soft on teachers, hard on everyone else.
7) Has terminal cancer -- the chicks are just going to eat that up with a spoon.Of course, she's not real. But nobody's perfect. :)

I'd assume because Granny's website is probably the most inconsistent pile of festering goat turd on the planet. Seriously, their content manglement (yes, very appropriate) system is awful! Links in the side bar on one page are gone in the next. A multi-page article suddenly loses half the content when you make it a single page. Or you go from page-one-of-three to page two and it's now page-two-of-two.
I don't call conspiracy, I call utter incompetence on the part of the site designers/administrators.
