  • Hugh Wilson,

I enjoyed that Rodigan extract last night and will cop the book when it comes out – from a few things I’ve read it seems not all has always been full peace & love in Rodigan’s world of reggae, which seems to parallel Jamaica & the genre in general I guess – volatile characters abound! Paul Bradshaw touches on some of this here: https://ancienttofuture.com/2017/02/20/david-rodigan-a-life-in-reggae-roddy-you-a-dubwise-smody/

Elsewhere Australian producer Mista Savona is getting close to the release of his Havana meets Kingston project – the lead single dropped last week (its on Bandcamp and 45) & would mix extremely well with summertime anywhere, and theres a snazzy video of the project (which has a seriously impressive cast of musicians) too:

Another thing I’ve enjoyed this week – Cut Chemist & B+ in conversation on David Axelrod, with some of his stuff and sampling songs mixed in as well.

And the new Lorde in the New Yorker:

  • Russell Brown,

More records released on Lorde Day:

Grayson Gilmour's rather delightful new song 'Hundred Waters'.

And Pitch Black's single of 'It's the Future Knocking', with remixes by International Observer, Alpha Steppa and Deep Fried Dub.

Seriously looking forward to that Pitch Black show tonight ...

    :'-(

At least I have a single to download when I get home.

And the Lorde release is pretty good - not a great house fan myself, but it's cool she can do a dancy tune.

  • Kimberley Verburg,

I'm reassured to hear that I wasn't the only one hearing Taylor Swift in there, although I couldn't pin down exactly what it was.

I'm also reassured that, while Lorde has clearly developed musically, she's still keen on teeth.

  • Ian Dalziel,

Just hope the new Lorde video doesn't encourage more young folk to lean dangerously out of the windows of moving vehicles...

  • Tim Michie,

I think I prefer Lorde's Green Light song more than the video. I can relate to it more.

    *Punk’s

Or perhaps it does mean 'Punks who are not dead'. That would work. Sorry. It has been a long week.

  • nzlemming,

I keep an eye on SXSW and I do wonder if it hasn't completely jumped its shark.

    Ditto. The song is good.

I'm hearing Kate Bush in the chorus. But yes, Out of the Woods. And that's a good thing.

  • Ian Dalziel,

That piano/keyboard riff in Green Light feels very familiar - tugging at some memory of a National FIlm Unit doco from last century or similar, or perhaps just a mammalian-brain-friendly sequence of frequencies...
    ...it does get in, though!

  • Vivid,

That SXSW contract has the whiff of government about it. In the present US environment I'm sure that immigration has sent the directive to keep their immigrant workers legal.

Although getting super-nerdy is sort of anti-punk... I'll think you'll find there are probably whole thesis already written, explaining how the ethos of punk is counter establishment to a whole range of issues, including the norms of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.... :D
