At the risk of appearing self-promotional, here's another one-woman band from Auckland.

I've been wondering who did that Ring Ring re-edit for aaaaages - Greg Wilson drops it a lot. Just realised Greenwood did that amazing Buffalo Stance edit too.
THANKYOU -
(You remember all those garage rock bands ready and waiting when The Datsuns had their moment? No?).
My memory of this time is that existing pop-rock bands suddenly started writing more garagey songs, which never quite felt right. There were good garage bands, though, but they weren't necessarily ready or waiting.
I remember a BBC radio profile on the D4. They took the listener on a tour of the King's Arms, as the legendary home of Auckland's indie rock scene (and, like, you could smoke pot in the garden bar). That seemed to be crying out for an actual scene to introduce listeners to, rather than just making it seem like a couple of random bands were fluking it.

I'd have def been up for the record fair, but I'm off to Wtgn for the weekend - I'll do some digging down there to make up for it. have fun spinning.
and to boost spirits of the hangover the looms over everyone here at work today...

I'm OK with the bedroom boom, but I gotta say there's nothing better for kicking the bullshit and solipsism out of some over-sensitive young person than robust interaction with a band. Rhythm sections have a limited tolerance for "ethereal" and "atmospheric", as do most audiences.
Just on the general FYI front, Estere's a good mate of my niece and a lovely girl, but she hasn't been 17 in about 5 years.

Georgia on my mind...
...but Broods’ Georgia Knott
That's not right, it's not Knott, but Nott!
And here she is - from Play it Strange days
and mentioned in despatches... -
...this craggy-lookin’ lot from the Waitakeres
who'da thunk that this texmexcajunbilly-follyfootthemeclone came from deep in the woods of the 'Leopardskin Print-cipality' of Waitakere...

I seem to remember lots of garage rock bands from around that time. Besides The D4 and The Datsuns there was Rock n' Roll Machine, The Accelerants, PanAm, The Have and I'm sure there were several others. Anyway in a week that Lorde and Rhys Darby appeared on Letterman it's nice to look back over 10 years ago to when The D4 were on it

Bill Cosby!!!!!!

There's also Mihirangi, who's been a favourite of mine long before the rest of the country discovered her via TV.

Really - I'm a Nott on my birth mother's side (from Australia though).

James Green, in reply to
2003?? Surely that was only a few years ago...
Though one thing on my list before I come back next week is to walk out and take a photograph of a sign for the 'D4' road.

I was at the release gig for Proteous, the debut album by excellent young Dunedin duo Astro Children last night, at Chick's out at Port Chalmers. The evening was going swimmingly until some young bloke came up to me and said "It's great that old guys like you are still coming out to see bands".
I glared at him and the little ferret scampered off. In his defence, he was a bit drunk and I kinda admire his guts to say what he did.

Ok, now we're stretching it, but before someone posts that Gladiator, these guys represented the ANZACs in 1994.

You could expand this bedroom (largely) one person band thing to Tiny Ruins, Luckless, Cool Rainbows, Dear Time's Waste, Grayson Gilmour, Zen Mantra all of whom have released excellent records of late.
It's often a bit dubious lumping people into a 'scene', but (Tiny Ruins who's more folk aside), there is a minimal but lush dream pop vibe to a lot of it.
Given so many of them are young, and are just starting out I don't remember a time of being so excited by all the talent about.

Very much like the DTW album.
Claire Duncan (aka Dalziel) pops up on the latest Julien Dyne album December with the song Tonight.
One for Ian. :-)

was just up at Real Groovy and caught the Henry Wagons and the Wagons instore. great band in an outlaw, bluesy-country fashion. he's a bloody funny guy with it and has something of the beardy Jeff Lynnes about him.
they're at the Kings Arms tonight, and I recommend them most highly indeed.

Oh yeah. Right up there with Dave Allen.

I can't quite tell if the late and truly great Paul Hester was playing in this clip? The camera moves around too much... it's good to remember him, he was such a gloriously energetic entertainer.

And not forgetting Nick Harte / Shocking Pinks. Remember Emily?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PZbOrHUXdc (sorry, I'm a novice at uploading the video proper...too afraid to ask! Perhaps someone can let me know off line - thx.)Is he still active? He did release an EP Guilt Mirrors in 2012 but I don't hear too much about him on the live circuit.
