  • Craig Ranapia,

All young women deserve someone who sings love songs to them. I don't know if you get too much of that these days.

Call one a cock-eyed optimist, but I suspect there's a lot of teenagers out there who deserve a lot more credit that the grown-ups give them.

Fer sure, Craig. There are hundred of thousands and I meet some of them daily.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

I've been told Romeo & Juliet were 14yrs old?

And a little unsettled at the 14yr old model who sat for Hinemoa and is cast in bronze at the edge of lake Rotorua.

I think, to a degree, our sensibilities have changed in relation to our extended years upon this earth.

  • Emma Hart,

That sounds about right. Juliet's nurse swears by her virginty at twelve years old, which carries an obvious implication. But in England the age of consent was 12 until 1875. Most twelve year olds would have been working, and they wouldn't be hitting puberty until about 16 - 18. This teenagerhood thing is a relatively new concept.

The age of consent also varies a lot from country to country even if you just look at Western nations, and I'm sure everybody feels, as we do, that the age is about right?

  • Robyn Gallagher,

I grew up reading Dolly magazine, including all the frank advice about contraception and STDs. The funny thing was, boys were not paying me the slightest bit of attention, so even though I had a headful of knowledge, I had no way of putting it to practice. How annoying!

  • Danielle,

feminism still largely blames men for everything

    Forehead, meet desk. I despair.

How about 'not lying'? How about describing girls in some way where girls who DO experience sexual desire in their early teens can recognise themselves?.... But mostly, how about 'hey, you know what, everybody's different, and it's okay if you want to, and it's okay if you don't'?

I just want to repeat this. I agree with it. Vehemently. In a kind of scary 'backing away from the crazy person at the party who is ranting at you about something really important to them' way.

I may be familiar with this facial expression.

I think I may also get what Pebbles (I think) was saying about girls finding Paris Hilton accessible, but it may be overly long-winded and personal.

  • Andrew Paul Wood,

At the risk of revealing my kryptomisogyny again (again mea culpa, I'm inclined to be flip) - judging from NW and Who, a lot of men have found Ms Hilton 'ahem' accessible over the years. But really, what teenager could financially afford to have La Paris as a role model. Having taught a number of girls in their late teens and early 20s, the general reponse is that Paris is a skank and not remotely cool.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

I was taken a back by an 'official' email advertising the local Merlins Rugby Club "Dirty Girls" night going through Lincoln Uni yesterday.

It came from the LUSA entertainment organiser and was passed on to everyone on campus.

Totally sexist - girls are free!

But seriously I never thought I'ld see an official email like this.
