Ah. Apparently face masks don't work.
University of Otago Professor of Epidemiology Julian Crane, who is also the director of the Wellington Asthma, Allergy and Respiratory Group, said he expected any health risks related to the fuel to be minimal.
People with healthy respiratory systems would likely feel little effect from the fumes, but those with asthma or other similar ailments should stay away from the area.
Issuing face masks would be of little use, Mr Crane said. "The first thing is if they're those little plastic face masks that just fit to your face it won't do anything ... even a proper mask, even then some of these particles will be very small so I don't know if it will keep them out."

To be sure, he is reaping some of what he and his ideology has sown. My sympathy reservoir is not very big. Interestingly some kiwiblog and NZ Herald droolers say that the answer is more free market trashing.hard of learning, much?

3410,
Okay, so why then should people stay away? This is confusing.

Sacha, in reply to
Heard some of the reason is to avoid traipsing hydrocarbons all over the rest of the place. Simpler to clean up if it stays mainly on the sand, though I understand it has been blowing further inland anyway.

Crude oil sounds like rather unfunny stuff. I think they probably don't want people keeling over in it. They'd have to get a politician (no breathing, you see) to pull the people out.

Now, I hope that his gang get tossed out more than anything at the moment but he’s had the worst earthquake, the worst oil spill and the worst mining accident for nearly 100 years all on his watch.
Hey, Hamish, thanks for leaving the Muslims, queers and godless liber-uhls out of the frame for all that. You know what, you might want to think twice about using a natural disaster that killed 181 for a cheap political drive by – then don’t do it. Try making whatever substantive policy point you've got to make instead.

Health risks from oil spills.
-
3410,
Fuel oil, not crude, I'm pretty sure.

I believe he was expressing sympathy.

Yes, heavy fuel oil. Which I gather is nastier than crude.

I don't think Hamish was saying what you thought he said.

I am sorry you misunderstood me, there Craig. I was actually saying that I think he has been unlucky for all of this to happen to him. I do not wish to be counted among his supporters but I think we should remember that he's had a lot to deal with.
If I'm making cheap "political driveby points' I'll let you know -

+1.
NZ's had a terrible time of late and any government, any PM, would be struggling just as much as the public.

Cool. Thanks for the clarification, and sorry about giving the wrong end of the stick a good gnawing. Really shouldn't read stuff like this on an empty stomach -- because I'd really like to think nobody is going to play Rena quite that cynically.

No worries

3410,
Group hug.
-
Oh oh, man hugs! Flee, while you still can!

MNZ has 60 public volunteers kitted out ,gumbies, white overalls, mask, and training, ready to start in the morning People this arvo were moving up the beach, bags of frozen (was) meat patties. They came in with the tide and were going back out with the tide. The locals moved it up past the high tide mark.Seems it is now being bulldozed further.
That's what I saw on TV3 news.
He tangata! He tangata! He tangata! -

Because banning Bomber Bradbury from The Panel is just like invading Poland.

you'll start a war with that sort of talk, comrade

the worst earthquake, the worst oil spill and the worst mining accident for nearly 100 years all on his watch.
Plus one of the worst ANZ domestic air accidents (Fox Glacier) and a financial meltdown, still progressing...if I was superstitious I would say John Key attracts bad luck...but I'm not superstitious.
I just think he is an awful PM, and will go down in history as such.
-
Paul Williams, in reply to
You think he'll go down in history?

Islander, in reply to
Right down - if he's remembered for anything.

I suspect there's quite a few heads of government asking themselves"what the bugger was I thinking?" nowadays. :)

Odd!
This post opened with Bradbury's banning.
How the hell did we wind up here via Tauranga?
