  • Kyle Matthews,

    From Pansy:

Further, I am not able at this point to give the Prime Minister an assurance that this is a one-off situation.

That's one way to say it. "Er, I've done this several times" is another.

  • TracyMac,

...And now that I've played around a bit:

    - endorse, sorry, VALIDATE the comments about placing the page navigation at the top of the comments as well as the bottom.
    I like the numbering that goes << < 1 2 3 4 *5* 6 7 8 9 > >>, where the double arrows increment the navigation in 10s.

    - The font in the nicknames above the gravatar images is being cut-off for me. Letter descenders are missing (IE 7 on XP - I'm at work, so sue me).

On an unrelated note, equating a dislike of Comic Sans (ok for an invite to your home barbie, but not professional material) with a liking for obscure bullshit language in academic papers seems to to be an interesting equivalence...!

  • Matthew Poole,

Oh, oh, oh. Point of order, Mister Speaker. One does not, ever, write 15:37PM! 3:37PM or 15:37, but never, ever, 15:37PM. To be fixing, please.

Also, I see that there's a per-blog RSS for comments but not an aggregated one for the entire site. Is it possible for this to be offered? Going back to my comment earlier about using PAS's RSS to track comments to threads of interest without having to delve into the site proper and without, now, having to maintain an RSS feed for each blog of interest.

  • Ian Dalziel,

    beyond the vail, id ate*

Even better: clicking the “validate” button checks the internal logic of a comment! ;-)
Except for Ian D., in which case computer would usually crash, I presume.

    check this : comlogicment...
    er, comiclogcement,
now I'm stuck in a jam...

*having doffed my hat, I'll eat it, too...

ps: thinking about the Grayed 'Preview' button,
perhaps it could be black and the 'Post' button in gray - but then it could turn black after you have used the 'Preview' button at least once, - though you could leave it so it still worked without going to Preview - thus it might help reinforce good habits (and possibly allowing second thoughts on hasty posts) I recall someone saying, yonks ago, that "Preview is your friend", couldn't agree more...

...hmmm, weird, having written that the Preview doesn't show me the whole text I wrote, though I'm sure I could see all of a preview of a much longer post earlier on?
    What would cause that?
(I'm using Firefox on a Mac if that's relevant)

    ...Here's hoping, <click>

  • Glenn Pearce,

Actually, after having used it for a day now the white space is a bit of a waste of screen real estate if you read the threads backwards like I do.

Disable Typekit and I prefer it that way.

  • FletcherB,

I'm alternately enabling and disabling the much complained of typekit.... and not only do I have no preference, I can detect no difference...

    What is wrong with me?

  • giovanni tiso, in reply to FletcherB,

The font ought to change perceptibly. Look at the question mark at the end of your comment, disable/enable and see if it changes.

We're about to deploy a set of small changes that should address many of the concerns here. Be right back...

  • Anonymous Author,

Yes, I do like what you've done with the place. Slab serifs are wonderfully immediate. It was some other well-known writer who claimed 'I shot the serif, but I did not shoot typography'. If nothing else, the redesign has enticed me to participate after merely lurking about like a ghostwriter in the machine. The law of unintended consequences perhaps?

Yay. "Report" is back - and bold commentor name is better than a kick up the jacksie (well, except for those who struggle reading greyish text)

  • James Butler,

Without trawling through 200+ responses, does anyone else really like the Typekit fonts (of those for whom they work properly)?

FTR, I really like them (FF 3.6.12, Ubuntu 10.04 and FreeBSD 8).

edit: Ah, I see you now, Anonymous Author.

edit 2: Umm, the CANCEL button doesn't work when editing.

  • Carol Stewart,

I love what you've done with the place. I'm impressed with how speedily these suggested modifications have been enacted too.
As it's Friday may I share this comment which came home from school today care of 11 year old:

"Did you know it takes 40 different muscles to frown.
But only 9 muscles to .. reach out and slap someone?"

Well, it seemed pretty riotous at the time.

  • Steve Parks, in reply to JackElder,

Very handy tip about clicking links Jack, thanks.
I only have the built in-type 'mouse' on my laptop which no middle key/scroller, but if I click both left and right simultaneously it opens in a new tab.

  • Jackie Clark,

What a very quick response to the overwhelming popularity of the page numbers menu. Fabulous.

Ahem, "All Threads" shows no such thing. Resorting to Search to dig out a moderately recent one.

Right, ya go out or a few daze, come back and it's all over the place like a mad woman's shit. Now I'll need a few more daze to figure it all out. I am so confused! But you knew that anyways.
Ha, took me ages to find the previewed post! an' it's just down a bit doh!

Back playing on my mobile with Firefox. Looks fabulous and the-right-size.

  • Lyndon Hood,

And equally fine in the default maemo browser.

I say keep the typekit as a way of making people switch from windows. Typographical hotness.

  • David Hood,

not only do I have no preference, I can detect no difference...

If you have your browser set to disable javascript, typekit would have no effect, and on a Mac (even when javascript is on) if you disable Typekit, the default fonts are very similar looking.

I (with my pretty miserable network connection at home) am just glad things seem usable without javascript.

(though without javascript, the preview button is a post one)

  • Sacha,

I believe Matt has made changes so that browser/platform combos that don't support Typekit now default to using Arial/Helvetica for headings regardless.

Much nicer, although Arial is a bit boring.

Still, funny that using Firefox on Ubuntu gives nearly perfect font rendering compared to Windows XP. Must remember to try Windows 7 when I get home.

And as a part-time web developer I like what you did with the media queries. Dynamic layouts are cool :-).
