I always wonder about Paul Holmes' columns in the Herald- they are just so nakedly partisan when you compare them with, say, Fran O'Sullivan. Why doesn't he declare that he helped to media train the National leader for the 2005 election?

merc,
Jacinda Ardern was very diplomatic about Farrar, Key and fully up with the play. Knew the Peter Lange stance, said her blogging was hard work but that she enjoyed it. She is the real deal, her comment that only Labour had the structure to take National head on, resonated. Good sense of humour too. Door knocking is a pretty cool thing to do I reckon, it's my birthday too ;-) that's why I was at central, my electorate is Tamaki, we discussed this (Muldoon's old hang and includes GI where 100 people are being turfed out of their state houses right now, brighter future indeed).
My friend said she saw Winnie at the fair. There was a medieval display with swords and stocks with a person in them that people were throwing veges at, could have sworn it was Gerry... -

In context, we were discussing my electorate. My last electorate was Epsom. I cannot remember her exact word, I don't think it was actually structure. What she said made good sense to me. Prior to Tamaki, I was in Epsom, before that Helensville - Key carpetbag land, prior to that Mt Albert (Helen), so I get around. I asked for some specific advice, her answer made sense to me.
The main thing this year for me is to vote, my daughter just turned 18, so I have been agitating - erm, trying to influence, which I don't usually do. But I was around for Muldoon, this is the same sort of National with the added munter of Act. -

Tension over "Tea Gate" boiled over through Radio Live airwaves when shock jock Michael Laws told listeners to kill journalists.
Wonder what Mikey puts on his forms under occupation if it isn't 'Journalist'?
Talk about yer classic psychological self-hatred projection...

I'm sure he'd just write 'Ascended Luminous One'.... -

Organisation?
Labour certainly has that advantage at local level. If only it were enough to win elections.
-
merc,
I asked a very pointed question and Jacinda Ardern answered it very tactfully for me. I think Labour know well where they have fallen short, and frankly look at what they are up against, Mr teleprompter...I don't accept that proposition...Key.
The facts on the ground don't mean much when I meet people who are voting for Key because they think he is better looking even though they think Goff has better policies.
Oh and I haven't seen a Nat to talk to. I've only ever seen one once, Brash, when he was a Nat at a cultural festival. I've seen in person Banks, no presence, Hide, clownish, Helen, very present, Peters, funny, Lange, smart, Muldoon, creepy. -

I'm in the news business, not the law business, and if a politician says something of political significance in private but isn't prepared to front up and say it publicly then I'll call them on it every time. I'm a journalist, it's what I'm supposed to do.
If you are trying to tell me that there's no story when a National Prime Minister talks to a former National Party cabinet minister turned ACT Party candidate about the political future of the ACT party leader (also a former National party leader – and incidentally was replaced in that role by the current Prime Minister) then don't be surprised when I disagree. Forcefully.
In and of itself the seeming duplicity isn't a big deal. It's a large part of politics. However what is a big deal is the reluctance of Key and Banks to front up to it. That's why they're being challenged.

Re people not voting. Was anyone else aware that Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t vote? We’ve been talking alot of election politics this last couple of weeks at work, and today I asked one of our teaching students if she was going to vote (she’s 18), and she told me that this little fact about JW’s. “We don’t get involved in politics” she says. I was so angry, I had to go outside and have a cigarette. (It was lunchtime, don’t worry). So now we know who some of the 20%-30% of people who don’t vote every three years are.

. . . the tendencies of mind nowadays are for protection, regression, simplicity, security and certainty.
Well if you want all of these in a bunch, the best thing you can do is to become a Jehovah’s Witness. You needn’t worry a hell of a lot about your morals; when you meet a Jay Dub you never get the impression that he’s going to be snooty about your moral life. The fact is he’s got his eyes fixed on the New Kingdom and any general drop in morals gives him a great kick because it’s a proof that the first part of the heavenly war is over and Satan has been well and truly slammed down upon this earth.Ian Hamilton, Till Human Voices Wake Us, 1953.
Conscientious objecter and pacifist Ian Hamilton’s memoir of his WW2 internment in NZ includes some interesting observations about the various varieties of internees, both political and religious. He points out that although Jehovah's Witnesses won’t serve in combat they are not pacifists – they’ll be right in there at the final battle against Satan, which will be fought down here.

This latest debacle, the teapot tapes (at least they are not being compared to Watergate, yet) will go down in history as one of the low points in NZ politics.
I'm thinking that's a short sighted view of some of the lowest parts of NZ politics.

The irony is, nor do the Exclusive Brethren - but that didn't stop them attempting to bad-mouth the Greens or bankrolling Brash and co in the 2005 election.

I thought he was a bit obtuse with his opening, though. A week of giving Key the well-deserved grilling that he's not had for the last five years doesn't mean the last five years of complaining wasn't justified.
One reason I am hacked off with the way the media are behaving now is that we shouldn't have had to wait five bloody years to see Key subjected to intense scrutiny. He shouldn't have been able to get to even the end of the first year of this term without his non-appearance on RadioNZ being front-page news. I've written two excoriating posts on Your Views about how the media are largely to blame for the opprobrium with which the public is treating their treatment of Key, because it looks like the faithful dog turning on the kind master for no good reason. Five years of fawning familiarity will do that to your perceived relationship.
It's nice that we're finally getting to see The Real Key[tm], but we needed to have the actuality of "the smiling assassin" exposed before he became PM, not a week before he appears set to (though I'm still hopeful that he won't) get a second term. -

Totally. Truth to power is the paid job of both media and opposition.

I go backwards and forwards on this. Yes, a large part of me snarls "Don't vote, don't complain the other eleven hundred odd days between elections." But I've got to admit some sympathy with the counter-argument: I don't have to agree with your colleague's reasons, but I do have to respect them. She may be exercising her democratic right negatively, but she's still using it.
