  • Anonymous Author,

    Done.
Good exercise for the heart and mind is reaching out the hand to help.
Although that makes it sound like a charitable act, when in truth, this is a contribution long overdue for the quality content.

  • Steve Barnes, in reply to Bart Janssen,

I hear he makes good coffee

Actually, when I think about it he may just about have broken even on the amount of his Whiskey I have poured down my throat.

  • Russell Brown, in reply to Rowan Crawford,

Just a thought, but I’d add PA to the things I flattr.

And I'm very interested in flattr. It could even be used for readers to give a little to other readers who write particularly useful and spiffing comments -- I quite like that idea.

Thanks for reminding me to follow this up.

  • Russell Brown, in reply to Tracey Barnett,

This doesn’t need to be a one-off. Make it one annual ask.

That's actually a good idea. I'd still like to be able to offer a direct reward for financial contributors, but there are lots of ways of doing that.

  • nic.wise,

Done and done. Thanks for all the brilliant content Russell. Now make sure you clean the Paypal account regularly, so PP doesn't lock the funds up :(

Keep running the site, I'd consider that a direct reward!

So the blogs, comments, and community aren't enough?

He does. And as I've enjoyed one, along with Falafel, I'm still in debit, I reckon... ;-)

  • Steve Barnes,

So, run a popular website for half a dozen years and write a billion words a day of well thought out commentary, for no cash reward, then ask for contributions. not very good at these "Get Rich Quick" schemes are we Russ?.

What a pleasant thing to be able to spend money on.
And now you are in my saved payees list. Just saying.

  • Matthew Poole,

    Done.
The community you support here is quite enough “reward” for the majority of us, I suspect. You don’t ask us for much – just the odd reminder about our tone, and your tolerance for our intemperate outbursts is saintly – so consider the contributions our tangible expression of gratitude for running a place where so many come to enjoy the company and the discourse.

  • Michael Savidge,

    With pleasure.

PA provides such a valuable range of opinion, information, wit, links, ideas and general excellentness that I'd be happy to contribute annually. I imagine it wasn't the easiest thing to do to ask for help but you, Russell, have built and provided for this community so it's the least we can do.

My boss and I are occasional contributors to PA threads and we very much understand the difficulties in providing a valuable service to the community for free. So, at the risk of being denounced as a 'me too' threadjacker, if anyone feels like contributing to another good cause, please feel free to do so.

They were hoping to get flattr-a-twitter-handle working for the first of May, apparently, but it's been delayed. When that's working I think I'll be upping my spend and spreading the love.

  • Robert Urquhart,

Done. And would be perfectly happy for it to be an annual thing with the "what you can/will" clause dispersing any guilt if there were less to squeeze out of the budget in any given year than the year preceding :)

  • R A Hurley,

Done. Student poverty aside, I couldn't live with myself if I did nothing and the only reasonable place on the local internet went howling into the abyss. Plus, Russell did just score me sweet concert tickets. Thanks for everything, Russell. (Also, my Mum has a huge crush on you).

  • Ant Timpson,

Whatever happened to BONGO, KONGO or whatever the hell it was where our world was going to change via elegant and simple TXT payments. Why the hell can't I give PA some money that way.

PAYPAL are absolute pricks, especially if you get ripped off by a third party and attempt to get your money back.

If auto rollover subs scare people and sometimes they do - "damn I'm still paying for IMDB 5yrs after I thought it was cancelled!!" - sell branded coffee mugs for $30 that you get for $5. I think all PA readers are avid coffee snobs and would like a collectable mug each year.

Just to make your day, I should note that Shayne emailed me to say your comment was "really quite perceptive. stuff i'd never really considered/thought myself but probably actually quite on the money."

Thanks for everything, Russell. (Also, my Mum has a huge crush on you).

    Aw, nice. Usually's it's someone's nana.

Then of course there's that not insignificant thing you do called the Great Blend, albeit with some help from friends, it is still giving back.

If the world weren't such a sordid place, I think a 'Plays nicely with mothers' badge would be appropriate. But it is, so probably not.

  • Katita,

Love your work. Happy to make a donation (sorry it can't be a bit more) and like the idea of an annual whip-round.
I consider Public Address the antedote to the TV "curent affairs" shows I end up screaming at (yeah I know there's an off button).

+1 for Flattr. I haven't signed up yet but Public Address having Flattr buttons might tip me over the edge and make me subscribe.

Done and re the annual sub/donation/whatever. I entirely agree.

Not everyone's flush, and that's bloody important to remember, but if you're able, I reckon a regular contribution to offset the costs, at least, of this community is well justified.
