Spring for me is heralded by the Kingfishers that come to nest in our phoenix palm. One of the pair turned up on Sunday and has been around much of today, calling out and beginning the work of digging out the nest in the tree. I hope they have more luck this year, I found two eggs at the base of the tree last year so assume they lost them overboard.

photographing the tui in the campanulata cherries.

Rings a well-tempered cheery bell for me, thanks for your effort!

Colour change - my first of the year and these a good Spring indicator yet somehow Freezias suggestive of brass monkey weather?

Agree that winter and early spring can be terribly pink. Candy pink in abundance. These are just the most common lachenalia (L. aloides var aloides) but they sure put on a good show.

Pathetic bird snaps compared to Bruce’s and Carol’s …. well, and everyone else’s.

but i have craned my neck to catch these so….

I think this tui was somewhat drunk on nectar - very erratic flapping

Not especially spring-y, sorry, but it was nice to finally find an awake animal in Beijing Zoo this afternoon. My wife took the photos while I took charge of getting the wee one into positions where she could see over the railings and crowds.

Awww.... are they really bad-tempered and smelly?

  • Chris Waugh, in reply to Hebe,

I've only seen them in the summer when they seem to spend as much time sleeping as possible. I would guess that high altitude forests in Sichuan and Gansu are a lot cooler than Beijing. So I've never seen them getting bad tempered. As for smelly, they're in fairly large enclosures and tend to stay well away from the crowds, so again, I don't know.

Reflecting my forlorn mood today, I give you man with dead tui (found) and magnolias. He freezes such birds until he has enough to hand on to a local kuia who still makes feather cloaks.

Like pretty much all of Christchurch I spent a bit of last weekend’s sun in the botanic gardens. I was particularly enamored of the magnolias – I love the over-the-top flowers against the bare branches and..oh..the fuzzy buds!

Magnolia stellata can be very starry, or very rumpled and muppet-like.

And finally, this amazing magnolia perule, which sheathes the bud while it’s developing. Thanks to Abbie for telling me the proper name!

Love the softly backlit picture Lilith- grey skys are good for something after all! And the little perule looks like a little bird : )

Look, it was so dim! I was hand-holding some of these at 1/20sec! But fortunately most of them came out, with a bit of pushing. :-)

Oh Lilith! Do you know the name of that top pink magnolia? It is none other than Mark Jury, named for him when he was but a small boy. We have the original plant in our park here.
