– I’ve been arguing on the internet for 18 years –
I can see that in the masthead: Public Address: arguing on the internet since...
Holy crap, Richard Aston, that kereru looks unreal! And likewise David Hood's Lake Grassmere. I'm glad it has a caption because otherwise I couldn't have guessed!

Oh its real all right - it loves that spot - in summer our Kereru eat over ripe guavas and get drunk - I have seen it on that spot, on its back with one wing in the air , waving.
Now that was unreal. -

I’ve heard they get tipsy when the fruit gets overripe but never seen it, how wonderful.
-
I have seen them kidding around though - stalling in mid-air and plummeting towards the ground and then suddenly flapping their wings and levelling out.

I've seen them falloff a kowhai tree-branch, toppled by the nectar-

That's the Morning Glory seeds working...

Do those extremely interesting crustaceans (mantis shrimps?) have roe in 'em?
Succulent looking dish anyway-
-
Simon Grigg, in reply to
The dish is Kung Chae Nam Pla and it's both delicious and normally made with fresh water prawns.
I think, however, these large servings you find in Chinatown likely are Mantis as they're much bigger than the ones we get at the local cafes. Roe, I have no idea about.

Bloody wonderful nearly-in-flower bromeliad!
(Never seen one so wonderfully red – mine are all green wee things, a couple with red splotches…)And – Gareth- for some weird reason (maybe they mistake it for a water surface, she suggests, dubious about the suggestion) kotare do that *a lot.* Lovely birds – we have a lot of ’em round the lagoon-
Incidentally, as opposed to kereru & pipiwharauroa (& young thrushes), kotare rarely *kill* themselves by crashing into windows…

Oooo!
And I ignorantly thought that thing was horrible!
Must get a shot of the Oamaru Opera House, lit up, when I'm there this month.
Maybe too late for the steampunk train though... -
Gareth, in reply to
It hasn't done it since! Mind you, I nearly jumped out of my skin, the noise at impact was so loud...

Try a pigeon flying into the window at full bore!
I'm amazed they've never broken a window yet (and they've tried all 12!) -
